As a seasoned gamer with years of experience navigating through various digital landscapes, I can’t help but feel a sense of empathy for those affected by the changes at TelevisaUnivision. The media industry, much like the gaming world, is constantly evolving, and adjustments are inevitable. However, it’s always tough to see familiar faces moving on or roles being restructured.
This week, TelevisaUnivision is set for a significant restructuring led by its newly appointed CEO, Daniel Alegre. The goal is to revitalize the company’s operations amidst a tough competitive landscape within the media industry.
As per a memo sent by Alegre to the team on Monday morning, the modifications will involve job cuts throughout the organization. Sources indicate that this move is expected to affect a mid to high-single-digit percentage of our workforce.
Alegre acknowledged the upcoming week might be tough, but he requested everyone’s attention and determination as we embark on crucial moves towards a robust and interconnected tomorrow. In unity, we are constructing a company designed for continuous progress, creativity, and authority.
The newly appointed CEO, taking over from Wade Davis in September, additionally revealed his executive team, who will streamline the organizational structure for several critical business sectors.
The biggest departure in the changes is Jesús Lara, TelevisaUnivision’s head of U.S. local.
After his departure, the responsibility for local ad sales will shift to Donna Speciale, who will oversee advertising efforts encompassing both local and national, as well as linear, digital, streaming, audio, and multiplatform video content.
Alegre wrote that this setup provides a unified, problem-solving access point for all our American advertising partners to engage and expand their reach within our audience.
From now on, Ignacio Meyer will be in charge of managing local content, and he will additionally take responsibility for overseeing audio production. At the same time, he’ll continue leading U.S. linear programming.
TelevisaUnivision is establishing a worldwide content division, headed by Jose Luis Fabila, currently responsible for programming at TelevisaUnivision Mexico.
José Luis will make sure that our content investments line up with our company’s objectives for reach, audience engagement, and monetization. He will also manage the effective distribution of this content across all international platforms using a suitable strategy for release timing,” Alegre wrote. “This is an amazing chance to improve the way we present top-notch content to our global viewers.
Furthermore, Rafael Urbina, currently serving as COO of the ViX streaming platform, has been appointed to manage all digital and streaming operations moving forward. Essentially, he is taking over from Pierluigi Gazzolo, the outgoing CEO of ViX, who previously announced his departure at the end of this year.
You can read Alegre’s memo, below.
Hello Team,
Hey there! Just wanted to drop you a line about some major updates we’ve got brewing here. We’re making some key shifts in our company starting this week, all geared towards solidifying our stand for 2025 and beyond. I’m excited to share that we’re introducing a brand-new organizational layout, which is going to have significant impacts on quite a few of us gamers here.
As a gamer, I’m making these adjustments to strongly focus on the four main goals I’ve set for our future gaming sessions:
- Integration and Collaboration: Working as one company in everything we do.
- Content First: Everything starts with great content, and we must align our teams and strategies to continue connecting, informing, and entertaining our communities.
- Solution Selling: Our partners’ needs are evolving, and we must serve them in ways no one else can in the market.
- Culture: We must rebuild a growth mindset, grounded in innovation, across the entire company.
The adjustments involve shifts in leadership positions in certain sectors and a realignment of duties for improved synergy, concentration, and effectiveness.
Hey there gaming community! I wanted to give you an update regarding some changes happening within the company. Our lead in the U.S., Jesús Lara, has decided to move on from the company. In response, I’ve chosen to restructure our U.S. teams. From now on, Donna Speciale will take charge of U.S. advertising sales, overseeing both local and national efforts across linear, digital, streaming, audio, and multiplatform video platforms. This new structure aims to create a streamlined and solutions-focused approach for all our U.S. advertising partners seeking to collaborate and expand with us. Keep gaming, everyone!
Moreover, Ignacio Meyer has been assigned to oversee both U.S. Audio content and Local Programming, in addition to his existing responsibilities for U.S. Linear Programming. Donna and Ignacio will collaborate with separate U.S. local teams to clarify the functioning of this revised organizational structure.
I’d like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Jesus Lara for his unwavering commitment, innovative ideas, and valuable input at TelevisaUnivision over the last eight years. He will be collaborating closely with Donna and Ignacio to ensure a seamless transition for the teams merging into their respective organizations.
From a content strategy perspective, I have asked José Luis Fabila to lead all our content efforts and create a newly formed Global Content Organization. José Luis will ensure that our content investments align with our company’s reach, engagement, and monetization goals, and are distributed efficiently across all platforms worldwide with the right windowing strategy. This is an exciting opportunity to elevate how we deliver world-class content to our global audiences.
Our talented Business Unit Leaders will work closely with José Luis:
- Ignacio Meyer will lead our U.S. Core Business, as well as our music and audio content teams, reporting to José Luis. In addition, current U.S. Networks Programming and Marketing Teams will also be rolled into roles in the Global Content Organization. Jose Luis and Ignacio will provide further detail to these teams.
- Rafael Urbina will oversee digital and streaming operations, performance marketing and CRM, focusing on driving adoption, increasing consumption, and optimizing the global user experience. Jose Luis’ content and brand marketing organization will provide VIX with content acquisition, development and production services as well as planning and creative services to support VIX marketing. Rafa and José Luis will provide further details to their respective teams.
- Olek Loewenstein will continue to lead the sports business unit, collaborating with José Luis’ Global Content Organization.
These leaders will remain key members of my broader leadership team.
Ultimately, it’s important to mention that our team structure is changing within the company this week. Making such decisions isn’t always straightforward, but we are determined to help each team member navigate through this period of transition.
I understand that this will be a challenging week, but I ask for your focus and resilience as we take these important steps toward a stronger and more connected future. Together, we are building a company positioned for sustained growth, innovation, and leadership.
Thank you for your trust, contributions, and commitment to our mission and goals.
Daniel
