As a long-time fan of Eminem and someone who has followed his tumultuous relationship with his mother, Debbie Nelson, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of empathy for both Eminem and Nate Mathers as they navigate this difficult time. Debbie Nelson’s passing is undoubtedly a significant loss, and the complex feelings that come with it are all too relatable.
Through his music and statements, Eminem hasn’t shied away from discussing his complex relationship with his mother Debbie Nelson over time. Interestingly, following her death at 69, it was his half-brother Nate Mathers who first publicly expressed his feelings about her passing, using just five words to do so.
On the evening of Monday, December 2nd, Debbie Nelson passed away from complications linked to lung cancer, as confirmed by Dennis Dennehey, a representative for Eminem, according to reports by TMZ. This news follows her diagnosis in September and her subsequent description as “terminally ill” by In Touch.
Not long after word of Nelson’s death broke on December 3, Nate Mathers posted this on his Instagram story, in white text against an all-black background:
Hatred and mixed emotions today.
As of now, Eminem hasn’t shared anything on social media regarding his mother’s passing or in response to his brother’s post.
