As a long-time admirer of German cinema and its rich history, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation for the new era at Studio Babelsberg under the leadership of Marcus Loges. With his extensive experience in producing some of the most iconic films shot at Babelsberg, such as “Cloud Atlas,” “The Queen’s Gambit,” and “Babylon Berlin,” it’s clear that he possesses a deep understanding of the studio’s unique charm and potential.
I’m thrilled to share that as of January 1st, I’ll be stepping into the role of head of production at the legendary Studio Babelsberg, a position previously held by Henning Molfenter for the past two decades. This exciting news was officially announced on Wednesday. I can hardly wait to start my tenure!
As a gamer, I’ve had the privilege of contributing to numerous projects filmed at Babelberg Studios. Among these are the epic sci-fi film, Cloud Atlas, which was co-directed by the visionary Wachowski siblings and Tom Tykwer, and the captivating Netflix series, The Queen’s Gambit. I’ve also been part of several productions under the Wachowskis banner that were shot in Germany. This includes serving as a producer on their Netflix show, Sense8, and taking on the role of production manager for James McTeigue’s V for Vendetta and Ninja Assassin.
Lately, Loges has been functioning as a line producer for the popular German series “Babylon Berlin,” which was jointly created by Tykwer, Henk Handloegten, and Achim von Borries.
It’s a tremendous joy and privilege for me to come back to Babelsberg – a place that embodies both tradition and innovation, and international collaboration like nowhere else. I am thrilled to contribute more significantly and guide the development of this unique location as part of the team in my new role.
Loges’ appointment is subsequent to Jörg Bachmaier taking over as CEO of the studio last month. This leadership change occurs following the purchase of the studio by U.S. investment group TPG Real Estate, which took place in 2022. Notably, TPG also owns Cinespace Studios in Chicago and Cinespace Toronto.
Loges will collaborate closely with Babelsberg CEO Jörg Bachmaier and the studio’s management team, specifically Eike Wolf, who oversees operations and marketing at the studio.
Molfenter’s long-time service at the studio was acknowledged by Bachmaier with gratitude. Since taking over as head of film and TV production at the German backlot in 2004, this seasoned producer played a crucial role in rejuvenating the studio, enticing major Hollywood productions to film there. His impressive portfolio includes production credits for numerous blockbuster films like Roman Polanski’s “The Pianist,” Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds,” Roland Emmerich’s “Anonymous,” Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and “Asteroid City,” the Russo Brothers’ “Captain America: Civil War,” and Chad Stahelski’s “John Wick: Chapter 4.
