This biopic focuses on music legend Bob Dylan during the initial stages of his career. The film has already generated buzz for the awards season, largely due to the captivating performances of an unnamed actor and Monica Barbaro, who portray Bob Dylan and Joan Baez respectively. For those who consider it unusual that Mangold cast Timothée Chalamet as the legendary folk singer, his co-star from “Dune” might initially concur. As reported by Variety at the Gotham Awards, the actor from “Dune” (who plays Chalamet’s father, Duke Leto Atreides, in the Denis Villeneuve sci-fi film) and some of his fellow “Dune” co-stars (Josh Brolin & Stephen McKinley Henderson) were skeptical about Chalamet as Bob Dylan, to put it mildly. Isaac himself admitted this apprehension.

Initially, my mind instinctively rejected the notion as it seemed incredibly ill-advised. After all, we’re talking about Dylan here – an idol I hold in high regard. The idea simply didn’t resonate with me. However, Timmy pulled out his guitar, which wasn’t a promising start.

“Josh, Stephen, and I aren’t ordinary fans of Timmy. We are seasoned film enthusiasts, who have witnessed many things. Yet, listening to this novice guitarist, barely into singing, with limited knowledge of Dylan’s music, interpret these songs as if he was recalling something familiar rather than learning it for the first time left us speechless. The three of us simply found ourselves mesmerized by this young man as he tapped into a hidden, enigmatic connection.

Oscar Isaac isn’t unfamiliar with folk tunes, having played a key role in the Coen Brothers’ movie “Inside Llewyn Davis“, which prominently featured folk music to drive its storyline. Thus, Chalamet receiving endorsement from Isaac would be one of the highest compliments for his portrayal of a renowned folk singer.

Initial responses to “A Complete Unknown” have lauded Chalamet’s acting, describing it as Oscar-caliber. Notably, this isn’t the first time Mangold has helmed a musical biopic; he previously directed “Walk The Line” and cast Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash, demonstrating his ability to recognize talented actors capable of portraying legendary musicians as Bob Dylan, for whom Chalamet will be channeling.
