As an ardent fan of Sanjay Leela Bhansali‘s cinematic masterpieces, I must say that his OTT debut with Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar was nothing short of spectacular. Aditi Rao Hydari’s account of her challenges in bringing her character to life on-screen is both fascinating and inspiring.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali made his impressive debut on streaming platforms in 2024 with Heeramandi: The Diamond Market. Lately, Aditi Rao Hydari, one of the main characters in the series, shared her struggles in portraying her character authentically on-screen. She revealed that the director instructed her to feel hungry before acting out scenes where she delivered passionate speeches in the show.
Aditi Rao Hydari spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about tackling some of the toughest scenes in Heeramandi. She highlighted two crucial mujra sequences in the movie that deviated from the dance styles she was familiar with. Consequently, mastering these scenes and living up to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s high standards, a renowned perfectionist, proved to be a significant challenge for her.
She conveyed that she had mastered Bharatnatyam previously, but what she encountered next was Kathak, specifically from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s perspective – a renowned perfectionist with extensive knowledge. The aim was to execute it flawlessly and not let him down, which caused her many restless nights.
In addition to her revelation, the actress disclosed that the filmmaker employed an unconventional technique to aid her in expressing intense emotions during scenes where her character delivered moving speeches. Specifically, Bhansali asked her to fast in order to assist her in portraying those emotions more authentically since they weren’t easily accessible. Aditi stated that she willingly obliged this practice because it positively impacted her performance, and his relentless pursuit of excellence motivated her to strive for better results.
In addition to the filmmaking of Bajirao Mastani, the director playfully taunted the actress who portrayed Bibbojaan in the series. He suggested that she would add a tender touch to scenes that might otherwise be intense. She humorously recounted, “I found these scenes challenging, and he would joke that if I asked her for an energetic scene, she would turn it into a beauty scene. So he told me not to eat, and that’s how it unfolded.
In the film “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar” directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, an array of talented actors graced the screen, such as Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Fardeen Khan, Shekhar Suman, Sharmin Segal, Taha Shah, and others. As for now, Netflix has opted to continue the story with a second season, but specifics about it remain confidential.
