As a devoted fan who has eagerly anticipated the return of Severance since its gripping season finale, I must say I am nothing short of ecstatic about the upcoming second season. The journey to bring this enigmatic and captivating series back to our screens has been a long one, with production delays due to unforeseen circumstances like the writers’ strike and the relentless pursuit of perfection by the talented team behind Severance.
It has been quite some time since we last delved into the Innie and Outie realms of our beloved Lumon Industries employees; the production team behind “Severance” required almost as much time to shoot the second season of their popular and enigmatic series on AppleTV+. When this captivating show resumes airing on January 17, 2025, it will have been close to three years since its initial season debuted in February 2022. It’s also been nearly the same amount of time since they filmed most of what will be featured in season two.
In a recent chat with Vanity Fair, executive producer Ben Stiller and creator/writer Dan Erickson discussed why the show took time to come back and what viewers can anticipate from one of TV’s most gripping mystery series at present. Despite taking some time to pen season two, as Stiller clarified, production on the second installment had commenced in October 2022, only to be halted by a strike in May 2023. By that point, they had already completed around 7 out of the total 10 episodes, and then needed to reorganize following the strike.
How Did The Writer’s Strike Impact ‘Severance’?
After the strike ended, there was still a delay before full-scale production resumed. As Stiller pointed out, filming didn’t start until January [2024], and it continued through May to wrap up the final three episodes. Erickson further explained that they might not go through as many script pages per day as other shows, which is simply an effort to ensure we get it right.
Stiller expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I’m thrilled we’ve reached this point,” he added. “Creating a second season is intriguing since we now have an audience who shows interest. Throughout the process, it’s been at the forefront of our thoughts: ‘Amazing, people are actually tuning in to notice these finer points.’
What Can Viewers Expect From Season 2 of ‘Severance’?
After the thrilling and surprising ending of the series’ first season, many questions arise. The recently released trailer adds even more intrigue, with fans eagerly discussing every detail on Reddit in anticipation of its return. Stiller hopes that viewers will recognize that we are attempting to link some threads while also leaving others unresolved and presenting new connections to explore.
As Erickson explains, the second season will see our heroes facing even greater danger. Since they provoked the bear at the end of season one by starting a small rebellion and achieving some success, we’re curious to explore what happens when the bear retaliates. In other words, how does their victory impact them in the long run? To put it mildly, the consequences are severe.
In the first season, Erickson pointed out, the Innies were mostly like children in their experiences. However, the consequences of their actions will propel them into a stage reminiscent of adolescence. They’ll experience the pressure and confusion often associated with puberty, as they figure out who they truly are. “There’s an increased focus on discovering self-rule and defining one’s identity, rather than conforming to what others have told them about themselves.
Added Stiller:
In this series, the protagonists grapple with aspects of their personalities that they may be uncomfortable acknowledging or unaware of, yet these traits remain integral to who they are. This internal conflict mirrors the human condition of grappling with our own selves. Reconciliation and integration form a significant theme in the show, offering an opportunity for characters to achieve completeness and self-realization.
As a cinephile, I must say that “Severance” is a mind-bending cinematic experience unlike any other. It’s not just an NDA, it’s the ultimate one, for it locks you in a labyrinth of secrets that the characters themselves struggle to unravel. They’ll embark on a journey of discovery, exploring unfamiliar territories and encountering fresh faces along the way, all while grappling with the enigma that lies at the heart of their workplace. This intriguing tale will keep you guessing until the very end!
In the second season, we see some new faces such as Gwendoline Christie from “Game of Thrones,” Alia Shawkat, Stefano Carannante, and Bob Balaban. They all take on roles within a competing MDR pod. Additionally, Sarah Bock is introduced, portraying a character who appears to be too young for her office job. However, the creators, Stiller and Erickson, are keeping quiet about their characters’ schemes, so you’ll have to tune in to find out more!
Ultimately, Erickson stated that the second season will delve deeper into the question, “moving more in depth, exploring what exactly the company aims to achieve and why there’s a need for so much confidentiality.
