As a seasoned journalist covering the world of cinema, I have been fortunate enough to witness the transformative power of film firsthand. However, few experiences compare to the awe-inspiring encounter with the extraordinary talent that is Emily Blunt. Her journey, much like the characters she portrays, is a captivating tapestry of resilience, versatility, and an undeniable knack for embracing the unexpected.
On Thursday, during the start of the fourth annual Red Sea International Film Festival (RSIFF) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Emily Blunt graced the event with her stardom. She took part in a discussion about her acting career, covering topics such as her recent awards season run for “Oppenheimer”, potential plans for a sequel to “The Devil Wears Prada”, and collaborating with her husband on “A Quiet Place”. This conversation was held during an “In Conversation With” session.
The award-winning actress from Britain, recognized with a Golden Globe, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, a nod for an Oscar, and four BAFTA Film Award nominations, captivated the audience for over an hour, sharing valuable insights about the film industry.
As a gamer, I’ve got four siblings and I come from a family where my mom was an actress. She had to scale back her acting career quite a bit because of us kids. Reflecting on it, I can see why she said the entertainment industry can be tough. It’s like navigating through a maze of challenges, and sometimes you need a sturdy gaming helmet to withstand the impact!
Apart from this, she mentioned that she was a timid child who struggled with stuttering. However, creative endeavors have been like a key for her, opening up opportunities. Consequently, it’s no surprise that she devotes her time to assisting children dealing with stutters.
Talking about her method when tackling roles, Blunt admitted she initially feels uncertain about portraying a new character, but has grown fond of that apprehension and the challenge it presents. “Each time I am scared,” she said, “I seem to adapt to the thought that I’ll find my way there somehow.” The secret for her is collaborating with people who are open to working together and intrigued by the unique contributions each person brings to the table.
Speaking from a fan’s perspective, I’d like to share my thoughts on my experience working with Christopher Nolan on the movie Oppenheimer. What truly stood out for me was his incredible collaborative approach – something not always prevalent among writers-directors, given their often very distinct visions. As he constantly strives to push boundaries and innovate, it’s clear that he has indeed left an indelible mark on cinema.
As a gamer, I can’t help but heap praise on Cillian Murphy, a dear friend of mine, and Robert Downey Jr., two individuals I truly admire. Jokingly, I suggested that Murphy deserves an IMAX camera all to himself. “He’s the last person who should be famous,” I jested, adding that he’s so bad at it – in the best possible way!
On Thursday, she shared some delightful memories, including one from her early career days working with Dame Judi Dench. She expressed to the crowd, “She’s both graceful and playful and radiates warmth.
Blunt’s initial film that brought her attention was Pawel Pawlikowski’s “My Summer of Love,” which was predominantly improvised, adding another layer of difficulty. As she reminisced, the director would instruct her to “discuss Nietzsche,” a philosopher she admittedly knew little about at the time.
During a question about “The Devil Wears Prada,” Blunt received a large round of applause, reminiscing about being told about the opening weekend box office figures and wondering if that was a good amount. When asked about the movie’s enduring impact on her, she stated that it marked the beginning of multiple collaborations with Meryl Streep, but also continues to resonate as co-star Stanley Tucci is now her brother-in-law after marrying her sister Felicity.
In response to queries about a potential sequel for “The Devil Wears Prada”, Blunt shared: “There are whispers. Ideas are being developed. However, I can’t guarantee anything at this point. But rest assured, we would all be thrilled.
Indeed, “A Quiet Place” certainly sparked a lot of conversations. As a fan, I must admit I was a bit apprehensive about collaborating with John Krasinski, given his multifaceted role as an actor, writer, producer, and director on The Office. However, the script was so unique, with its captivatingly simple yet intriguing premise that piqued my interest immediately. Initially, I had suggested a friend for my part, but she found it amusing and encouraged me to take it on. The response was electrifying; it felt like being at a rock concert. In the end, none of us anticipated the meteoric success that “A Quiet Place” became.
Krasinski can work uninterrupted on his writing for eight hours straight, Blunt humorously noted. “He’ll ponder over it for weeks, sketch out storyboards and then compose the entire piece within a week,” she continued. “So he usually spends that creative phase in isolation, like being in a cave.
The celebrity expressed a desire to discover various dimensions within herself. She revealed on Thursday that she seeks opportunities with “unconventional perspectives” and is drawn to scripts containing “unusual characters” and “daring, adventurous concepts”. Rather than portraying individuals who have everything figured out, she prefers to play roles of people who are in over their heads.
The actress pointed out that some of her character portrayals have contrasted significantly with her actual life, as she once played the role of a volatile alcoholic while expecting one of her own children, in the movie titled “The Girl on the Train“.
She was utterly terrified” was how she described feeling when asked to portray Mary Poppins, Blunt mentioned later. Instead of re-watching the classic movie, she opted to read the book. To her surprise, the written character was found to be “extremely rude, vain, and humorous,” as well as “acidic.” This new perspective allowed her to deviate from Julie Andrews’ beloved portrayal of the role in a unique way.
As a gamer, stepping onto that stage, I was greeted by a thunderous applause from the packed audience. In the middle of my speech, I couldn’t help but notice someone dressed as everyone’s favorite nanny, Mary Poppins! Spotting her hat, I couldn’t resist sharing a laugh, saying, “Oh my goodness, there’s someone in Mary Poppins attire! What a delightful surprise!
She’s been asked if she could portray a Marvel or DC superhero, but Emma Watson has indicated that while she wouldn’t rule out any possibility, she currently views Mary Poppins as her superheroine, given that she can fly and perform other extraordinary feats in the role.
The young boy enquired about when there might be a sequel to Jungle Cruise, and Blunt jokingly suggested that he should phone Disney’s CEO Bob Iger. However, the boy mentioned he didn’t have the CEO’s number. In response, Blunt smiled and said she would help him arrange it. She added, “We really want to make another one.” However, she also shared that she recently completed a very intense movie with Jungle Cruise co-star Dwayne Johnson called The Smashing Machine, but warned the boy he might need to wait until he’s older to watch it.
Blunt is making more movies, yet she’s unsure about whether she wishes to script an entire movie or take up the director’s role. Despite her enjoyment in fine-tuning scenes, this decision remains unclear for her.
The actor, when questioned about the distinction between movie sets in Hollywood and Britain, noted that British filming seems more egalitarian, as everyone appears to contribute in whatever capacity they can.
One of several prominent Hollywood figures, such as the actress herself, is slated to appear at the fourth installment of RSIFF. Joining her will be Viola Davis, Michelle Yeoh, Andrew Garfield, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Nick Jonas, and jury president Spike Lee.
2024’s RSIFF (Ryotika South Indian Film Festival) will officially commence with the Thursday evening’s grand opening, featuring a special screening of Karim Shenawi’s film “The Tale of Daye’s Family“. This captivating story revolves around an 11-year-old Nubian albino boy named Daye who possesses a stunning voice. Due to his unique appearance, he encounters hardships throughout his life. His father has abandoned him, and he is often tormented by his schoolmates. However, Daye harbors dreams of emulating his idol, the renowned singer and actor Mohamed Mounir. When he gets a shot at auditioning for “The Voice“, Daye and his family embark on a hazardous trek from Aswan to Cairo in pursuit of his dream.
