Brandi Carlile on Writing Elton John Doc Song: “I Wanted People to Understand What I See in Elton” (Exclusive Video)

As a longtime admirer of both Elton John and Brandi Carlile, witnessing their collaboration on “Never Too Late” has left me absolutely enchanted. It’s not every day you see musical legends teaming up to pay tribute to each other, especially when the result is as moving and powerful as this song.

Upon viewing a preliminary version of the film titled “Elton John: Never Too Late“, Brandi Carlile was moved to compose a tune in honor of one of her esteemed musical idols.

As a gamer, I felt inspired to compose a melody after watching the documentary about how this legend embodies tranquility in his later years, refusing to succumb to aging’s concept. He simply won’t grow old or accept it, as I express in my song. I wanted listeners to grasp the resilient yet loving soul that is Elton John – a strength that resonates deeply with me.

In a unique turn of events, I found myself contributing to the creation of “Never Too Late,” a profoundly moving song. This masterpiece was woven together during the production of a documentary, where I shared vocals with John, and it was a collaborative effort with the talented Bernie Taupin and Andrew Watt in writing its lyrics and melody. The directors of this inspiring film, R.J. Cutler and David Furnish (who happens to be John’s spouse), were so deeply touched by the emotional resonance of the song that they chose to name the documentary after its very lyrics.

Title “Never Too Late” will be available for viewing in select theaters and on Disney+ starting December 13th. The film chronicles the reminiscences of a man named John, reflecting on his life and the initial stages of his five-decade-long career.

For more than two decades, John has adored Carlile,” he shares. “The idea of doing a duet with her seemed fantastic to me, as it offers a unique viewpoint rather than just my own. When I came across the lyrics, ‘You’re an iron man, baby,’ I was puzzled, but she explained, ‘You’ve endured everything; you’ve survived.’ The studio session was exceptional, and having all four of us there recording felt like a fresh start.
