Aaron Pierre is Working Hard to Prepare for DCU’s John Stewart Role After Netflix’s Rebel Ridge Success

As a devoted fan of the DC Universe, I am absolutely thrilled to witness Aaron Pierre’s journey as he steps into the boots of the iconic Green Lantern, John Stewart. His extensive background in portraying complex characters, from Malcolm X in “Genius: MLK/X” to Dev-Em on “Krypton,” undoubtedly prepares him for this monumental role.

Aaron Pierre is putting in a lot of hard work to accurately depict the cherished Green Lantern character, John Stewart, in the upcoming HBO series titled “Lanterns.” Interestingly enough, Pierre isn’t new to the DC Comics universe, as he previously played Dev-Em, a member of Kandor City’s Sagitari, on Syfy’s Superman prequel show, “Krypton.” Recently, in an interview promoting his upcoming film, “Mufasa: The Lion King,” Pierre discussed taking on the role of one of the protectors in the DC Universe. According to ComicBook.com, he stated:

As a passionate supporter, let me express that the team is absolutely thrilled to seize this chance to share this captivating story with everyone. In every aspect of my abilities, I am committed to upholding, honoring, and elevating John Stewart and the Green Lantern Corps. Fervently hoping that my efforts reflect this, and it resonates deeply within me.

Pierre, who played Malcolm X on the TV show “Genius: MLK/X,” will breathe life into the live-action John Stewart character, working alongside Kyle Chandler’s portrayal of Hal Jordan (the older Green Lantern). As James Gunn, co-CEO and co-chair of DC Studios, shared earlier in January 2023, this HBO Original series is expected to share a similar mood with “True Detective.” This was part of the announcement of “Lanterns” as part of the “Gods and Monsters” DCU lineup.

Aaron Pierre Portrays the First Bronze Age Green Lantern

In October, it was announced that Aaron Pierre had been chosen to play John Stewart, one of the two principal characters in HBO’s Lanterns. James Gunn, on Instagram, congratulated Pierre for securing the role, stating that his casting came after a “lengthy and challenging audition process.

Although many viewers recognize Hal Jordan from Ryan Reynolds’ 2011 movie, Green Lantern, they might not be familiar with John Stewart, Earth’s initial Green Lantern from the Bronze Age, who was responsible for Sector 2814. After Hal Jordan debuted in 1959 (Showcase No. 22) and Guy Gardner joined in 1968 (Green Lantern No. 59), John Stewart made his appearance in 1972.

John Stewart debuted in Green Lantern issue 87 following Guy Gardner’s injury. He stepped into Gardner’s role, yet he wasn’t entirely comfortable with the oath that the Emerald guardians were required to swear, except for the phrase “let fear be your enemy.” In a playful manner, he even suggested to Hal that perhaps he should be called the “Black Lantern” in Dennis O’Neil’s 1972 comic book. Consequently, given their partnership and friendship, it’s fitting that the upcoming TV series titled Lanterns, starring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, will emphasize the bond between these two renowned Green Lanterns.

Although there hasn’t been an announced release date for the “Lanterns” show yet, it’s expected that Chandler and Pierre will appear together in the HBO Original series sometime in 2026. In the meantime, fans of Pierre can look forward to hearing him as the main character in the Disney movie “Mufasa: The Lion King,” which is set to hit theaters on December 20th.
