As a cinephile who has been following the cinematic landscape for decades, I must say that 2024 is shaping up to be an extraordinary year at the box office. The dominance of sequels, particularly the phenomenal success of Moana 2, has left me both awestruck and slightly nostalgic.
I swiftly made my mark at the box office in no time, with the animated sequel to Moana raking in a remarkable $248 million during its initial week (according to Box Office Mojo). The long-awaited continuation of Disney’s 2016 film, Moana, is not only setting new standards but is also spearheading an unprecedented post-Thanksgiving weekend, outperforming other titles such as Wicked, Gladiator II, and myself.
If the projections are accurate, “Moana 2” ($50 million) will be number one, followed by “Wicked” ($33 million) and “Gladiator II” ($13 million) as the top three movies at the box office this weekend. The combined total for all films over the weekend is expected to reach $129 million (as reported by Deadline), surpassing the previous post-Thanksgiving weekend record of $119.7 million, set six years ago when “Ralph Breaks the Internet” ($25.6 million), “The Grinch” ($17.9 million), “Creed II” ($16.6 million), and “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” ($11.4 million) all enjoyed impressive earnings.
In its initial nine days of release, Moana 2 has earned an additional $205.3 million abroad, taking its global total to $453.4 million. With no major releases over the Dec. 6-8 weekend, Auliʻi Cravalho’s charming Moana and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Maui are set for a smooth sailing second weekend at the box office, as they are poised to maintain their position as the top-grossing film for a second consecutive week.

2024 is set to label one more title in its “Year of Sequels” roster when the highly-anticipated movie, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” featuring Jim Carrey and Keanu Reeves, hits theaters on December 20. However, prior to that, another Sony Spider-Man spinoff, “Kraven the Hunter,” will attempt to win hearts on December 13. As the year comes to a close, moviegoers can also look forward to “Mufasa: The Lion King,” “A Complete Unknown,” and “Nosferatu.
