As a passionate viewer who’s been hooked since the first season of Squid Game, I must say, I’m absolutely thrilled about the upcoming second season! The Golden Globes nomination has only fueled my anticipation. It’s quite amusing to think that this drama, which is still a mystery to most of us, has already made it to the list alongside some heavily-aired series.
The upcoming season of Squid Game is apparently pretty great.
On Monday morning, the Golden Globes announced that the second season of the Netflix drama was among the nominees for the best drama series. This category also includes “The Day of the Jackal” from Peacock, “The Diplomat” and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” both on Netflix, “Shogun” from FX/Hulu, and “Slow Horses” on Apple TV+. The Korean survival thriller is part of this esteemed group.
The unique aspect is that other shows have previously been broadcasted, whereas the second season of “Squid Game” has been meticulously hidden from the public prior to its December 26th premiere – except for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
It’s not surprising that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has nominated projects that haven’t been publicly released yet. For instance, Jamie Foxx’s stand-up special “What Had Happened Was,” which is set to release on Tuesday, is also nominated. However, it’s more common for the Globes to nominate titles that haven’t been released yet in movies rather than TV series.
To be considered for the 2025 Golden Globe Awards, a television series should have been initially broadcast in the year 2024 and submitted its episodes to the voting committee by November 4th. Typically, few TV shows are premiered in late December. However, given the built-in audience of Squid Game and Netflix’s penchant for releasing highly anticipated new seasons around holidays, it is possible that Squid Game may debut its seven-episode second season during this period. Notably, this release will coincide with the premiere of Netflix’s long-awaited NFL games, which will stream live on Christmas Day.
In an exclusive article by The Hollywood Reporter, creator of the popular series Squid Game, Hwang Dong–hyuk, reveals that a significant focus for season two will delve into the topic of choosing allegiances, or in simpler terms, deciding where one stands.
Hwang expressed that he was motivated by the observation that, no matter which way you look, people tend to categorize themselves based on factors such as generation, social class, faith, ethnicity or race. His intention was to craft a narrative that illustrates how our distinct decisions can lead to disagreements and spark dialogue about whether it’s possible to progress towards a future where we can surmount these separations.
Here’s the season two trailer below, and the full list of Globes nominees.
