Aaron Pierre Reveals the DC Series That Introduced Him to Green Lantern

As a long-time aficionado of superhero lore and animated series, I find myself utterly captivated by Aaron Pierre’s journey as he takes on the iconic role of John Stewart in the upcoming DCU series, Lanterns. Having been introduced to Stewart through Cartoon Network’s Justice League Unlimited back when I was just a lad, it’s heartening to see the English actor’s genuine enthusiasm for the character and his commitment to honoring the legacy of Green Lantern Corps.

As a devoted fan, I’m eagerly anticipating Aaron Pierre’s upcoming role as John Stewart in the 2026 DCU series, “Lanterns,” following his captivating performance in this year’s Netflix hit, “Rebel Ridge.” Before delving into that exciting prospect, Pierre himself has revealed the fascinating backstory of how he came to embody Stewart. It all started with a cherished animated series, which continues to be celebrated as the epitome of superhero shows.

Discussing his role in the upcoming film “Lanterns,” which he’s eager to start, a 30-year-old English actor shared that he was a child when he first encountered Green Lantern. This encounter happened due to a brief Cartoon Network series that ran for 39 episodes. Have you heard of this show before?

I think Justice League Unlimited might have been one of my first introductions to John Stewart.

2004 saw the debut of Justice League Unlimited, the final chapter in the DC Animated Universe, which started with Batman: The Animated Series back in 1992. This series also served as a continuation of the 2001’s Justice League. Often hailed as the best superhero show ever by io9 editor James Whitbrook, it tidied up many loose ends from earlier installments and boasted Phil LaMarr’s voice acting as Stewart. Given that Pierre would have been just 10 when he first encountered Justice League Unlimited, his long-standing fandom is evident, as shown in a recent interview where he expressed his desire to honor the role of Stewart faithfully.

In terms of my perspective, I’m fully committed to doing my utmost to assist, respect, and uplift John Stewart and the Green Lantern Corps in any capacity possible. I can only hope that my service aligns with this ideal and strikes a chord within me.

Aaron Pierre Still Hasn’t Seen Ryan Reynolds’ 2011 Box Office Flop

In his preparation for portraying Stewart, he might draw inspiration from DC comic books and numerous animated series. However, there’s one film that won’t impact him, not at this moment. Pierre mentioned in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that he hasn’t watched Ryan Reynolds’ financially underperforming movie Green Lantern, which could be advantageous.

He replied, “I haven’t caught that yet,” and then mentioned that unfortunately, it’s “absolutely” on his list to watch. Mr. Pierre, I strongly advise you to steer clear of that one. Released in 2011, the movie was a notoriously poor interpretation of the superhero that even its star, Reynolds, still jokes about today. With a dismal gross of $220 million against a production budget of $200 million, it currently has a 25% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences are a bit more lenient at 45%.

Fans eager for more Pierre can currently see him in “Rebel Ridge” as Marine Corps veteran Terry Richmond, and soon hear his powerful voice pay tribute to James Earl Jones’ legacy in “Mufasa: The Lion King,” where he takes on the role originally made iconic by Jones in 1994. This film will be released in cinemas nationwide on December 20, courtesy of Walt Disney Pictures.
