As a seasoned observer of the entertainment industry, I’ve seen my fair share of scandals and drama. But this current predicament surrounding Jay-Z is particularly intriguing, given his stature and influence in both music and sports.
During the weekend, 50 Cent boastfully shared an Instagram post that might’ve been puzzling to his fans. The aim of this post was apparently to tease his rap rival Jay-Z, and it featured a picture of 50 from his appearance on HBO’s “Entourage.” The caption read: “I’m unsure about what’s happening, but is the Super Bowl still going to take place? I’m merely asking for someone else’s sake!
If you didn’t find the humor in this, it’s perfectly fine. The jest is based on the fact that Jay-Z, who was recently implicated in a lawsuit alleging sexual assault involving him and Sean “Diddy” Combs from over two decades ago, oversees Roc Nation – the entertainment company that has been organizing the Super Bowl Halftime Show for the last five years. Additionally, 50 Cent is currently working on a documentary series about Diddy for Netflix. (We haven’t received a response yet from 50 Cent’s representative regarding his social media post.)

50 Cent’s posts on social media suggest a worry – whether it’s real or just speculation – that the publicity surrounding the allegations could negatively impact Roc Nation’s collaboration with the National Football League. Starting from 2020, Jay-Z, who is the executive producer of the Super Bowl halftime show, and his company have been transforming the musical interlude during the big game from a focus on rock and country to featuring a more diverse range of contemporary artists. This change was further amplified when they partnered with Apple in 2023, leading to increased viewership for performances by artists like Usher (2024) and Rihanna (2023).
The cost for these large-scale concerts, you might imagine, runs into tens of millions of dollars, even when the main artist performs without payment. The potential earnings from just the advertisements shown during the 12 to 15-minute halftime show can climb into nine figures, so organizations like the NFL and their broadcast partners strive to avoid any controversies, particularly after the infamous “wardrobe malfunction” incident involving Janet Jackson.
How might Jay-Z (the business), Shawn Carter (the individual), and Jay-Z (the rapper) be affected by Super Bowl LIX, taking place on February 9 in New Orleans with Kendrick Lamar performing at halftime? A recent response to a civil lawsuit posted on Roc Nation’s social media platform may raise doubts about their association in the court of public opinion. While the statement, penned from the perspective of a father and delivered with an unwavering conviction reminiscent of Hov, has garnered praise for its eloquence, it could potentially create confusion regarding their connection.
The post suggests that attorney Tony Buzbee, representing Jane Doe, was accused of trying to blackmail the rap mogul by filing a lawsuit for such a horrific crime. The post continues, stating that he had miscalculated his actions, thinking it would pressure the mogul into settling. Instead, it provoked the attorney to publicly expose him as a fraud. The attorney declares he will not give the mogul a single penny. The allegations are so heinous that the post urges the mogul to file a criminal complaint instead of a civil one. The author expresses their belief that anyone who commits such a crime against a minor should be imprisoned, and that the alleged victims would deserve real justice if that were possible.
It’s not clear why Carter chose to post the unsigned note on the Roc Nation X account instead of his personal X account, as his own account has been largely inactive since 2018. However, it still remains active with over 2.9 million followers (The Hollywood Reporter contacted Carter’s representative and Roc Nation for comment but didn’t receive a response). The intriguing aspect is that the response from the rap mogul was made through Roc Nation, which could potentially impact his Super Bowl contract. One might wonder why Apple, the NFL, and Fox wouldn’t try to distance themselves from a business partner facing allegations of a grave sexual assault in different circumstances.
In response to the filing, Carter’s lawyer, Alex Spiro (who represented Alec Baldwin in the Rust case, leading to it being dismissed permanently), has requested that the accuser disclose her identity. This is typically required in a civil case brought before a Federal court. Since a criminal claim cannot be filed in New York due to the expiration of the statute of limitations for someone of her age and the date of the alleged incident, her identity remains undisclosed.
Carter is already suing Buzbee, filing a suit after receiving a letter from him that was interpreted as an extortion attempt. An attorney representing Carter also wrote a follow-up message denying the rape allegation formally: “For the avoidance of doubt, Mr. Carter is entirely innocent. This is a shakedown. He is not mentioned, referenced, or implicated in any way in the criminal investigation of Mr. Combs. He is neither a target nor a person of interest in that investigation,” it reads.
If Carter manages to win his defense in the civil lawsuit, he may have grounds to argue tortious interference. This happens when an outside party intentionally disrupts a business agreement or relationship, causing financial damage.
Buzbee has his own interpretation of the road to legal bedlam, writing on Instagram that there has been a “coordinated and aggressive effort” against him that has included “filing frivolous cases against me and my law firm, defaming me with outrageous assertions to anyone who will listen, and having mysterious people follow me and my family.” Buzbee added, “People will see through this effort to discredit me and my clients and the truth will be revealed. I also won’t allow anyone to scare my clients into silence.” THR reached out to Buzbee via his law firm on Tuesday but did not immediately hear back.
In the midst of these legal proceedings, conversations are swirling. One user who is a fan of X commented, “Jay Z ought to be barred from any NFL position,” while another expressed, “If Jay Z loses his job at the NFL, all decisions he’s made should be revoked, so Kendrick Lamar won’t perform at the Super Bowl.
Back in 2019, Roc Nation signed a five-year contract with the NFL, and they recently extended this agreement in October. Carter’s firm has been serving as the NFL’s Live Music Entertainment Strategist under the NFL’s Inspire Change Initiative. Following the renewal, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell expressed that their collaboration with Roc Nation had been beneficial for both parties.
It’s unclear whether the NFL will take steps to separate itself from Jay-Z during this year’s most significant and profitable game; THR contacted a league representative on Tuesday to inquire about any potential alterations to the Super Bowl Halftime Show, but have yet to receive a response.
Meanwhile, 50 Cent is still expressing his thoughts as the situation unfolds. He recently appeared on BigBoy TV in an interview, where he expressed a touch of compassion towards Carter and his relatives.
Jackson stated, ‘They’ll step away… from the NFL, and it doesn’t automatically link them to that.’ He expressed concern for their well-being off the field, saying, ‘I just hope everything is okay for them at home.’ It isn’t about what they did. It’s about what others claim they did. The harm has already been inflicted by the accusation itself.’
