As a seasoned movie connoisseur with a penchant for espionage thrillers, I must say that Black Doves is a veritable feast for the eyes and the brain. The relationship between Helen (Keira Knightley) and Sam (Ben Whishaw) is nothing short of captivating, a rare breed of camaraderie that’s as intriguing as it is heartwarming.
Warning: Minor spoilers for Black Doves.
Among the standout features of Netflix’s latest spy thriller, “Black Doves”, is the deep friendship between its two principal characters, Helen (played by Keira Knightley) and Sam (Ben Whishaw). The story revolves around Helen, who is married to the UK’s Defense Secretary and a seasoned agent for a clandestine group called the Black Doves. They trade secrets worldwide to the highest bidders. With London as the Christmas setting, the series unfolds in the days following the death of Helen’s lover, Jason (Andrew Koji). Suspecting she may be next on the hit list, her former partner and confidant, Sam, steps in to protect her and unravel whether Jason’s demise is linked to Helen.
10 years ago, during her initial mission with the Black Doves, Helen first crossed paths with Sam. From the get-go, it’s evident that they share a unique connection that neither seems to have with others. Over time, Sam assists Helen in her training and their bond deepens, as evidenced by their candid and joyful exchanges. They openly trust one another and can be truthful about their identities beyond their roles within the Black Doves.
In numerous aspects, it can be said that only Sam truly understands the genuine Helen, and conversely, only Helen knows the authentic Sam. Despite not having seen each other for years, their reunion seems as if no time has elapsed at all. Yet, few would have predicted that their initial meeting after seven years would be so brutal and intense. Nevertheless, this violent scene vividly illustrates the explosive mix of joy and surprise that Helen experienced when Sam arrived to save her in a critical moment.

The Bloodiest Moment in ‘Black Doves’ Is Also Joyous
Ignoring her boss’s warning, Mrs. Reed (Sarah Lancashire), Helen quickly starts investigating Jason’s death. Her initial search leads her to his apartment where she comes across two hired gunmen, Williams (Ella Lily Hyland) and Kent (Eniko Fulop). They are looking for a hidden recording device in Jason’s place, posing as policemen. When they learn that “Jason’s girlfriend” is present, they immediately open fire on her. Determined to defend herself, Helen engages the duo, holding them off initially. As Kent charges towards her, it appears that Helen may lose the fight. But just when all seems lost, a sudden commotion occurs, and Sam miraculously appears and shoots Kent in the head. The violent event leaves Helen splattered with blood and brain matter as Williams manages to flee through the window.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’d say Joe Barton, the mastermind behind “Black Doves,” designed that scene to be both exhilarating and gruesome, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats. The bloodiest instant in the series, it sets the stage for the intricate bond between Helen and Sam. This is our first encounter with this pair, and their jubilation amidst a sea of blood symbolizes the complexities of their friendship, given their unconventional professions. After all those years, my reunion with Sam, I couldn’t help but be overjoyed, even drenched in blood and gore. The moment Kent’s brains splattered on my face was undeniably startling, but once I recognized it was Sam who had saved me, I gleefully screamed his name with a radiant smile.
Helen and Sam Would Do Anything For Each Other
As a devoted film enthusiast, I find Sam’s return to London poignantly symbolic of his unwavering commitment to Helen. Having vanished from the city seven years ago in an attempt to safeguard himself and someone dear, he now finds himself back amidst potential dangers – all for the sake of Helen. In the face of adversity, none of that matters to him as long as she needs his assistance. Just like Sam would go to any length for her, she reciprocates that same selflessness. In fact, it was her actions that enabled Sam’s escape from London in the first place – a desperate call for help from under fire, which was answered by an equally determined Helen. Her immediate response to his plea kept her entrenched with the Black Doves at a time when she was on the brink of leaving. These pivotal scenes serve as two sides of the same coin, offering a glimpse into the depths of their friendship and demonstrating the sacrifices they’re each willing to make for one another.
In light of their profession, it’s evident that Sam and Helen have a distinct bond that neither has with anyone else. A pivotal instance in the series occurs when Sam tries to dissuade Helen from taking a life. Although Helen is proficient in combat and handling firearms, she isn’t like Sam who acts as a ‘trigger man.’ Sam recognizes the psychological toll killing can have on an individual, and he wishes to spare Helen this burden. Consequently, he intervenes and ultimately makes the decision for her, relieving her of that responsibility. Because he cherishes and cares for her, he’s prepared to shoulder that burden himself. Constantly supportive of each other, the first violent and graphic scene introducing them to viewers symbolizes the mixture of excitement and brutality that characterizes their extraordinary friendship.
