As a lifelong fan of both Godzilla and Marvel Comics, I couldn’t be more excited about this upcoming crossover event! Growing up with the iconic roars of Godzilla and the thrilling adventures of the Fantastic Four, Hulk, Spider-Man, X-Men, and Thor, it feels surreal to see them all collide in one epic battle.
In recent times, Godzilla has clashed against many adversaries in blockbuster films, even the iconic monster King Kong. Now, the Kaiju is set to engage in battles with Marvel’s superheroes through a series of standalone titles called “Godzilla vs. Marvel“. This exciting lineup will feature characters such as Fantastic Four, Hulk, Spider-Man, X-Men, and Thor.
This signifies that Marvel is embarking on its first Godzilla collaboration in almost half a century, following the character’s appearance in the comic series titled “Godzilla, King of the Monsters,” which spanned from 1977-79 and was set within the main Marvel Comics continuity.
The six comic books unfold across various timeframes, starting with the debut in March for the initial installment. In the upcoming comic titled Godzilla vs. Fantastic Four, the focus is on the Fantastic Four confronting King Ghidorah, who now wields cosmic power as a new emissary of Galactus, the world-devouring giant. Here, Godzilla forms an alliance with the Silver Surfer in an effort to shield Earth. Ryan North penned this story, featuring artwork from John Romita Jr.
For several years, Marvel’s Vice President of Licensing and Publishing, Sven Larsen, engaged in discussions with the rights owner, Toho, concerning a joint project or event involving both their properties.
According to Marvel editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski, at first, our discussions were about reprints. However, as time passed and we had further talks, it became evident that both teams were eager for something more collaborative. And so, these joint projects began taking shape. These collaborations, in close partnership with Toho, were particularly fruitful. We believed the ideal moment to launch them was during Godzilla’s 70th anniversary next year. Working on these projects has been a delight, and we anticipate that this is just the beginning of many more exciting collaborations.
In recent times, Godzilla has experienced a surge in public interest. The film “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” grossed $571 million worldwide, extending the success of Legendary’s MonsterVerse. Moreover, the Japanese production “Godzilla Minus One” turned out to be a hidden gem and even won an Oscar. Last year, Godzilla also graced the comics of DC Comics in the release of “Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong”.
Dan Buckley, president of Marvel Comics & Franchises, expresses that kaiju, particularly Godzilla, hold significant value in Marvel’s comic lore. Recognizing the growing popularity of Godzilla and its relevance to our contemporary culture, we felt it was a fitting choice for collaboration with their teams. We’ve long admired Godzilla, but its increasing popularity makes it an ideal representation of the enjoyable experiences the comics industry can offer. Our primary objective is storytelling, but events like this crossover provide amusing diversions that our fans won’t want to skip.
