As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for immersive storytelling, I can hardly contain my excitement for “Went Up The Hill.” Having navigated countless virtual worlds, I’ve come to appreciate the intricate layers of psychological dramas and ghost stories that resonate deeply within us. The blend of these genres in this film promises an emotional journey that I eagerly anticipate.
Greenwich Entertainment has acquired the rights to the North American release of the psychological drama/ghost story titled “Went Up The Hill“, directed by New Zealand filmmaker Samuel Van Grinsven, who previously worked on “Sequin in a Blue Room“. This film features Dacre Montgomery, best known for his role in “Stranger Things“, and Vicky Krieps, recognized for her work in films like “Phantom Thread” and “Old“.
In a small town in New Zealand, Montgomery takes on the role of Jack, a man who was abandoned as a child and now returns for his mother Elizabeth’s funeral. There, he encounters Jill (played by Krieps), his mother’s widow, with whom Elizabeth had a strained relationship. As night falls, Elizabeth’s spirit begins to haunt them both, taking control of their bodies to communicate through each other. As Jack and Jill are drawn into a dangerous nightly ritual, they must find a way to free themselves from Elizabeth’s grasp before she pushes them too far.
The movie titled “Went Up the Hill” made its debut at the Toronto Film Festival. This is where it caught the attention of Caryn James from Hollywood Reporter, who praised Samuel Van Grinsven’s work in her review. She noted that this film, which is a ghost story, only occasionally references horror conventions. Instead, it thoughtfully employs the ghost as a tool to delve into themes of grief, abandonment, and the turmoil the deceased woman left behind even during her lifetime.
After our captivating debut in Toronto, it’s exciting that Greenwich will now introduce the film ‘Went Up The Hill‘ to movie theaters,” said the director in a statement. “I am eager for American audiences to witness the chilling performances of Vicky and Dacre in these truly one-of-a-kind roles.
Greenwich will release the film in theaters across the country this summer.
The film titled Went Up the Hill was brought to life by Vicky Pope, Samantha Jennings, and Kristina Ceyton. They worked under the banners of POP Film and Causeway Films.
In this scenario, Andy Bohn from Greenwich handled the negotiation process for the acquisition of the project, working with CAA Media Finance and Bankside Films as representatives of the filmmakers.
