As a long-time admirer of Dick Van Dyke, witnessing his harrowing tale of survival during the Malibu fire evokes a deep sense of respect and awe. At 98 years young, his indomitable spirit shines through as he recounts the courageous acts of his neighbors who helped carry him to safety amidst the approaching flames.
Dick Van Dyke shared his nerve-wracking tale of evacuating from Malibu during a fire incident on Thursday. At nearly 99 years old, he mentioned that his neighbors assisted in carrying him to the vehicle as they kept an eye on the flames drawing closer.
Last Monday night, I found myself staring at the Franklin Fire that erupted in the Malibu Canyon region, all while preparing for an unexpected evacuation from my home. Just like me, Cher and the esteemed Mark Hamil from ‘Star Wars’ were also impacted by this wind-driven blaze.
Coming from that hill, it was hard to miss – and boy, did I ever feel a rush! I had to scramble away!” This statement reflects the excitement and awe a gamer might express when describing an unexpected appearance of an enemy or a significant object in their virtual game world.
According to Van Dyke, assistance came when he was struggling to unroll a fire hose as there was a “small blaze” in the guest house.
He went on to say, “I was attempting to make my way towards the vehicle. By then, I was utterly drained. I simply couldn’t rise. In the end, three neighbors lifted me up and took me outside.
On a Tuesday, Van Dyke informed followers via Facebook that he and his spouse, Arlene Silver, along with all their pets, had successfully evacuated – save for their cat named Bobo. The following day, he shared an update stating that Bobo had been discovered safe upon their return to their residence.
As of Wednesday evening, the Franklin Fire has charred approximately 4,000 acres, with firefighters actively working to suppress the flames. While Van Dyke resides in a relatively secure region, certain areas of Malibu and Topanga Canyon are still under evacuation notices.
