As a gamer with a heart full of nostalgia, I find myself in awe of Tim Allen‘s remarkable journey through the sitcom landscape. The man, who once graced our screens as the self-proclaimed “Toy Story” actor and the lovable tool-time guy from “Home Improvement,” is now gearing up for another adventure with Kat Dennings in “Shifting Gears.
For nearly three decades, Tim Allen has been a mainstay in the world of television sitcoms, and he shows no signs of slowing down. His latest project, “Shifting Gears,” co-starring Kat Dennings, is slated to debut on our 2025 schedule. Although I’m eagerly anticipating Allen’s portrayal of a new family dynamic, the undisputed king of sitcoms, as he refers to himself, was recently reminded of his humble beginnings. It turns out that Allen was achieving significant career milestones an impressive 30 years ago.
In a nostalgic set of coincidences, the Shifting Gears pilot was filmed on the same lot as Home Improvement, Allen’s first long-running sitcom that aired on ABC for 8 years in the ‘90s. That was a big decade for the Toy Story actor, but it turns out this week in particular marks some major accomplishments. That was proven by a graphic shared on his Instagram that shows him holding down multiple #1 spots exactly 30 years ago, including top book, movie, and TV show, all at once. So it would seem congratulations are in order. Take a look:

Whether you are a fan of Allen or not, you have to admit that’s pretty impressive.
Surprisingly enough, I discovered that “The Santa Clause” was released 30 years ago! This classic Christmas movie has always been a beloved tradition in my family, and it’s amazing to see how it started a whole series, even with Mr. Allen being on the naughty list during the initial film. A Disney+ reboot followed suit, demonstrating its enduring appeal.
Looking back at this impressive milestone from three decades past, it stirs up a sense of nostalgia within me. While the original trilogy and the latest Santa Clauses series can be found on Disney+, the platform where Tim Allen’s finest works reside, I’ll never forget the thrill of watching them live during ABC Family’s 25 Days of Christmas.
Unlike the movie “The Santa Clause,” it appears that Allen’s other popular ’90s project, “Home Improvement,” won’t be making a comeback. Although whispers of a revival circulated, apparent disagreements among the cast seem to have quashed those rumors. It seems wiser to let things lie than to stir them up again. Moreover, it seems the actor from “Christmas with the Kranks” concurs, as he’s aiming for “three’s a charm” with his new show “Shifting Gears.
All things considered, three decades is quite an extended period. Despite Tim Allen seemingly maintaining good health, he’s now 71 years old. Given the success of Shifting Gears, it might be his final sitcom before retirement, contingent on its ratings and lifespan. Could it become the standout project he aspires for? It’s worth noting that Tim Allen had a remarkable era in the ’90s, with Home Improvement being particularly successful, earning several Emmy awards and even a Golden Globe for Tim Allen himself. However, only the passage of time will reveal the answer.
You can stream both Home Improvement and The Santa Clause with a Disney+ subscription.
