Bluesky Hits 25M Users As Exodus From X Continues

As a gamer who’s been through countless virtual worlds and social platforms, I must say, Bluesky‘s meteoric rise is nothing short of extraordinary! Remember when Twitter was the cool kid on the block? Well, it seems like the times they are a-changin’.

On Friday morning, Bluesky, a newcomer on the social media scene, reached an impressive landmark by amassing 25 million users.

Since Election Day, the site has been seeing significant growth as it serves those seeking a different platform to X, which was previously known as Twitter. Bluesky, in particular, has experienced exceptional expansion, with its user base increasing steadily. As per a post by Bluesky CEO Jay Graber on November 13th, the platform had approximately 6 million users in late August, and this number swelled to nearly 11 million in late October. On November 15th, it reached 15 million users, gaining another 5 million users over just five days, reaching a total of 20 million users by November 19th.

In recent times, the rate of new users joining Bluesky has decelerated somewhat. Competitors like Threads (owned by Meta) have replicated some of Bluesky’s popular aspects, but Bluesky has persisted in its growth trend predominantly at the cost of X. It appears that social media users are abandoning X due to concerns about an overabundance of bots, extreme content, crypto scams, excessive advertising, pornography, racism, transphobia, and misinformation on the platform owned by Elon Musk.

Over the past month, there’s been a flood of media entities, organizations, businesses, sports teams, and celebrities flocking to Bluesky, eager to help it solidify its position as a credible and authentic social media platform.

In February 2023, Bluesky debuted as a social media platform that required invitations for access. It transitioned to public availability in the current year and functioned smoothly until around mid-2024, which included the presidential election period. The heightened toxicity on X during this time significantly boosted user registrations. Originally established by Jack Dorsey, who was Twitter’s CEO at the time, in 2019, Dorsey departed from Bluesky in 2022.
