As a die-hard fan of the 90s slasher genre, I can hardly contain my excitement over the return of Jennifer Love Hewitt as Julie James in the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel! Having grown up with these films, they hold a special place in my heart and the thought of revisiting this iconic story with Julie James at the helm is simply exhilarating.
Exciting news! I’m thrilled to confirm that I’ll be stepping back into the role of Julie James for the highly-anticipated legacy sequel of “I Know What You Did Last Summer”. I first played this character in the 1997 horror classic, and had the privilege of reprising her in “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” in 1998. Until now, there were only rumors about my participation in the new sequel, but now, I’m glad to say that everything has been officially agreed upon and we’re all set!
Hewitt shared a major update on social media, posting a picture on Instagram where she is seen reflecting in a mirror surrounded by cards bearing the movie’s title. In her caption, she wrote, “There’s no time like the present to take a step back,” hinting at her upcoming project.
Julie James is returning. I know what you’ll be doing next summer!
As a thrilled fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the upcoming “I Know What You Did Last Summer” sequel, directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. The specifics of the plot are being kept under lock and key for now, but what we do know is that along with Hewitt, the charismatic Freddie Prinze Jr. will be back, reprising his role as Ray Bronson. Other cast members include Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Haur-King. Unfortunately, Sarah Michelle Geller’s character, Helen Shivers, won’t be making a return due to her untimely demise in the original. However, that didn’t stop her from dropping by the set recently, showing her support for Robinson and cheering her husband on.
The Fisherman Is Also Returning, or Is He?
Although details about the follow-up to the IKWYDLS saga remain scant, it has been confirmed that The Fisherman will reappear in the series, bringing both victory and violence. Filming for the movie is currently ongoing, and just last week, Sony posted a behind-the-scenes image on their Instagram account depicting the infamous hook – responsible for dispatching numerous teenagers in the initial films – from the set.
Indeed, it’s plausible that this might all be a clever strategy to maintain secrecy. Although we spotted the bait, the main character himself remained hidden from our view. It could very well be another figure assuming his role, just as Ghostface is portrayed by various actors in the Scream series. At this juncture, we’re keeping an open mind about possibilities, given our lack of knowledge regarding where the new movie falls within the sequence of events. We certainly hope that it will disregard the events depicted in the directly-to-DVD film I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer. Fingers crossed that it does!
Either way, we’re super excited that everything is official and Hewitt is returning. The legacy sequel just wouldn’t be the same without her, and now that all the pieces are in place, here’s hoping that Robinson and everyone involved in the production will be able to craft a worthy entry in what’s been a beloved – albeit stagnant – franchise for more than 25 years. Look for the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel to open nationwide on July 18, 2025, from Sony Pictures, and catch the original film and its successor available now on all VOD platforms.
