As a devoted fan who grew up watching the mighty Shaktimaan battle evil, I can’t help but admire Mukesh Khanna’s unwavering commitment to his creation. His refusal of lucrative offers and creative differences with big-name production houses like Yash Raj Films is a testament to his love for the character and his unwillingness to compromise its essence.
In a recent update, it was disclosed that Mukesh Khanna, who portrayed and produced Shaktimaan – one of India’s beloved superheroes from 1997 to 2005, had been presented with an offer by Yash Raj Films owned by Aditya Chopra for purchasing the rights to revive the character. Meanwhile, a fan-made poster of Ranveer Singh as Shaktimaan gained popularity online, but Khanna turned it down due to creative disagreements.
On his YouTube channel, Mukesh Khanna had a chat with Siddharth Kannan, where they talked about the time when a prominent film production company in India, Yash Raj Films, approached Mukesh to relinquish the rights for Shaktimaan.
however, he swiftly declined the financially rewarding proposition because of creative disagreements. Khanna clarified this happened concurrently with Ranveer Singh’s popular fan-created poster for the part gaining widespread attention, fueling rumors.
By sheer chance, a fan-created image of Ranveer Singh as Shaktimaan popped up on social media. Shortly after, I received a call regarding the rights. I responded by saying, ‘I’m not going to grant the rights,’ which is what he disclosed.
Given the prospect, he proposed a reversed deal where the production company could collaborate with him on the project, but they would not have creative control over its direction. Instead, he would maintain full creative authority.
Khanna expressed, “I advised them, ‘Inform Aditya, whomever he may be, if they wish to succeed, let them do so alongside me.’ I wasn’t keen on surrendering the rights solely for them to produce a disco-themed series. I flatly declined.
Previously, during a public interview, Mukesh – famously known for portraying Shaktimaan in the ’90s – stated that Singh paid a visit to his workplace with an aim to persuade him, yet the seasoned actor declined.
Khanna, who is known for directing an influential series, clarified that it isn’t solely about possessing grand acting abilities or being a famous actor. Instead, there should be a resemblance to the character of Shaktimaan, which was not present in the actor portraying Simbaa.
For those who might be unfamiliar, the Shaktimaan TV series spanned an impressive 450 episodes on DD National and gained widespread recognition as a familiar fixture in many homes. The show featured Mukesh Khanna in the leading role, while Kitu Gidwani, Vaishnavi, Surendra Pal, and Tom Alter played important supporting roles.
