Netflix's 'Carry-On' Ending, Explained: How Does Ethan Save the Day?

As I sat down to watch “Carry-On,” I couldn’t help but feel like I was embarking on a rollercoaster ride of suspense and action. The storyline was gripping, the characters were well-developed, and the plot twists kept me guessing until the very end.

Warning: Spoilers for Carry-On.

The latest action-packed thriller on Netflix titled “Carry-On” has made its debut, offering an exhilarating journey for viewers. This movie is set amid the chaotic atmosphere of LAX airport during Christmas Eve and might just become a cherished holiday tradition for many, particularly those who believe Die Hard is a Christmas movie. The story revolves around Ethan Kopek (Taron Egerton), a TSA officer, who has recently learned that he and his girlfriend, Nora Parisi (Sofia Carson), are expecting their first child.

Following his unsuccessful attempt at police academy entry and dishonesty during his polygraph test, Ethan seems to lack personal ambitions or goals for several years, fearful of reapplying. Remaining stationary as a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer, he now seizes the opportunity to talk about a potential promotion with his supervisor, considering his impending parenthood. In an attempt to test his readiness, Ethan is temporarily assigned to operate the x-ray machine, a role initially intended for his friend who graciously agreed to relinquish it for the day to assist Ethan in demonstrating his competence. This shift, however, sets the stage for an unforgettable day in Ethan’s life.

Right off the bat, Ethan receives an earpiece linked to a secret traveler, portrayed by Jason Bateman, who warns him that if he doesn’t follow the traveler’s instructions, his girlfriend will be in danger. Whenever a designated passenger approaches security, Ethan is supposed to allow the man and his luggage to pass through without any checks, regardless of what appears on the x-ray scanner. It turns out that Ethan tries to go against the traveler’s commands and contact the authorities, but he encounters obstacles because the traveler and his companion, the watcher (Theo Rossi), seem to have an extensive surveillance network.

Whenever he somehow passes a note to a police officer, the traveler encounters this officer and ends up killing him with a nerve agent that resembles a heart attack. From that moment forward, it’s evident that Ethan is not in charge, no matter how much he struggles to outwit the enigmatic traveler.

What Passes Through Security in ‘Carry-On’ and Why?

At the film’s start, our protagonist meets a couple of Russians whom he ends up killing. From them, he acquires a black suitcase adorned with a red ribbon. Inside this suitcase lies a lethally potent Russian toxin called Novichok, a substance the traveler intends to smuggle through airport security using an intermediary named Mateo Flores (Tonatiuh). His objective is to release it on a crowded airplane. However, contrary to first impressions, this traveler isn’t a terrorist. Instead, he’s a fixer, someone who carries out tasks regardless of their nature. In this instance, he was employed by private military contractors to eliminate Congresswoman Grace Turner (Jill Flint).

As Chair of the Armed Forces Committee, Turner put forward the Defense of Threatened Democracies Act (DTD), a proposed legislation aimed at safeguarding democracies under global threat, an idea that seems unfavorable to countries like Russia. However, the bill lacks the necessary votes and is unlikely to be passed. Unfortunately, this has led to a plot where the congresswoman is being targeted for assassination, allegedly as part of a scheme to make private military contractors wealthy. The plan, it’s said, is to create the illusion that the Russians assassinated the congresswoman on American soil due to the DTD, thus prompting Congress to strongly support her bill. Once passed, the act would provide a financial windfall for those who stand to benefit most: private military contractors.

How Does Ethan Prevent the Attack?

Since Mateo has passed away, the traveler is compelled to personally transport the device. He’s not intending to be a hero and carries a parachute for safety. Unfortunately, when Ethan swapped their cases, the carry-on didn’t fit in the overhead bin, so the flight attendant put it in the hold with other checked luggage. Although this caused some annoyance, the traveler can still manage the device from his phone. However, unknown to the traveler, Ethan managed to sneak onto the plane’s cargo hold while it was temporarily halted on the taxiway. Being skilled at defusing such devices due to the traveler’s guidance before, Ethan intends to do so again.

In my recent cinematic experience, I found myself soaring through the skies, hot on the trail of a mysterious device. As a cunning moviegoer, I successfully pinpointed its location and disarmed its remote activation capabilities. However, this action didn’t go unnoticed, and the enigmatic traveler retaliated by sneaking up from below and taking a shot at me.

The movie leaps forward by a year to Christmas Eve the following year, with Ethan and Nora en route to Tahiti, their baby in tow. As they cheerfully pass through airport security, Ethan nonchalantly deposits his LAPD badge into an x-ray bin before clearing the metal detector. Now free from fear, Ethan’s professional ambitions were rekindled and ultimately realized. You can catch Carry-On on Netflix right now.
