Packed with unexpected plots, the newest action-thriller on Netflix titled Carry-On, centers around Ethan Kopek (played by Taron Egerton), a TSA agent at LAX airport on Christmas Eve. A secretive traveler (portrayed by Jason Bateman) hands him an earpiece, instructing Ethan to follow his commands, or else his pregnant girlfriend, Nora Parisi (Sofia Carson), will meet a tragic end. Struggling between upholding righteousness and saving Nora’s life, Ethan tries to inform the authorities without alerting the traveler of his intentions.

Time after time, the traveler appears to be one move ahead of Ethan. By accessing the airport’s surveillance system, the traveler and his partner, Theo Rossi, can see everything that unfolds. Even when Ethan manages to pass a note to a police officer, the traveler encounters the officer first and kills him using a toxin that triggers a heart attack. From then on, it becomes apparent that Ethan is not in command. Regardless of how much he might strive to outwit the enigmatic traveler, he consistently finds himself one step behind.

The film, an exhilarating holiday mystery-thriller, subtly unfolds a complex web of a lethal conspiracy. Initially, Russian gangsters are introduced, later betrayed and eliminated, hinting at underlying motives. It’s evident that something more sinister is at play. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that the protagonist, far from being a terrorist, is merely an individual hired for covert operations. Clues pointing towards his employer are cleverly concealed within the narrative itself.

Right from the start, tidbits concerning Representative Grace Turner (played by Jill Flint) and her Defense of Threatened Democracies Act (DTD) are subtly introduced to the viewers. Initially, there’s murmur about the DTD and its struggling progress in Congress that gradually becomes apparent to the audience.

As Detective Cole (Danielle Deadwyler) steps into the charred remains of the warehouse where the traveler had slain the Russians, it doesn’t immediately strike me as a key detail. It isn’t until Ethan and Nora are casually having lunch that a glimpse of the news on TV catches my eye – showing Representative Turner advocating for her bill. At this moment, the connection becomes strikingly relevant.

A hint revolves around the mysterious traveler and his tendency to speak freely. During their encounter in the restroom, the traveler hints at making a statement with minimal casualties. This conversation, when compared to the lunch scene, implies that the person who hired him might be connected to the U.S. government or a related agency. It’s unclear what the traveler is up to, but it seems to involve Representative Turner’s bill in some way. However, while viewers may think they are witnessing the main revelation, this is actually a misdirection intended to divert attention from the major twist that lies ahead.

In the movie, while everyone, including authorities and viewers at home, are fixated on Flight from Terminal 7 heading to New York, Ethan discovers that it was merely a distraction. The courier, in fact, received a ticket for a different flight, departing from Terminal 8 bound for Washington D.C.

The shocking revelation unfolds when audiences discover that Representative Turner is secretly traveling on the D.C. flight with her infant, but using the alias Grace Suarez to avoid detection. This explains why she wasn’t identified by airport security as a possible threat. Once all the clues are gathered, it becomes apparent that the traveler was employed to orchestrate the representative’s assassination, an act intended to enrich private military contractors.

By poisoning her with a Russian nerve agent to create an illusion that she was targeted due to her opposition to the Disarmament Treaty (DTD), which Russia opposes, it would generate widespread support for her bill in Congress. This, in turn, could lead Congress to expedite the passage of the DTD and provide substantial financial resources to private military contractors. Fortunately, Ethan manages to uncover this plot before it’s too late and prevent the attack. Don’t miss Carry-On on Netflix.
