As a longtime comic book enthusiast and moviegoer, I can’t help but feel a sense of relief that the Sony Spider-Man Universe might finally be coming to an end. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the efforts to expand the Spider-verse beyond Peter Parker, but unfortunately, these movies have fallen short in many aspects.
Unlike many internet users, I don’t derive satisfaction from a studio’s downfall. Instead, I appreciate their success because it allows them to produce more films, take on riskier projects, and continue entertaining us. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is a perfect example; without the massive success of 2008’s Iron Man, we wouldn’t be looking forward to future Marvel productions like Thunderbolts and Avengers: Doomsday.
Nevertheless, I must express my honest opinion. Following an article from The Wrap revealing potential setbacks for “Kraven the Hunter,” which could possibly signal a pause in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, I sincerely hope they cease producing movies related to Spider-Man. Here are some reasons why I feel this way.
I’m Tired Of All The Teases Of Spider-Man That Are Never Going To Come
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, the sight of Spider-Man in the Morbius teaser trailer left me absolutely infuriated – and I’m not letting go of that feeling anytime soon. It was this very cameo that had us all speculating wildly about whether Spidey would actually make an appearance in Morbius, only to be definitively proven wrong once the film finally hit screens.
However, the question of whether the classic character Spider-Man might show up in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe has been a topic of discussion since the initial release of the Venom film. Frankly, it always seemed illogical to me that there could be a Venom movie without Spider-Man, given their deeply connected relationship.
In other words, since they managed to pull it off in the initial Venom film, I had hoped that if they were to create more Spider-Man movies without Spider-Man, they’d keep their distance from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as much as they could.
However, Sony seemed to overstep boundaries. Initially, the unexpected moment in Venom: Let There Be Carnage where Venom licked Tom Holland’s face left fans excited and optimistic. This was followed by Tom Hardy’s brief appearance at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Even director Jon Watts, who helmed the first three MCU Spider-Man films, expressed that it would be “extraordinary” if these two characters crossed paths.
Indeed, after all the tantalizing hints without any fulfillment, I’m genuinely relieved to learn that we might no longer ponder if Spider-Man will ever grace the Sony Spider-Man Universe. It’s somewhat disheartening, considering my affinity for Kraven the Hunter as a top Spidey nemesis; however, let’s delve deeper into that subject at a later juncture.
I Also Never Liked The Idea Of Two Ongoing Universes
Earlier, it was confirmed that Tom Hardy appeared in a post-credit scene for Spider-Man: No Way Home, while Tom Holland made an appearance in Venom: Let There Be Carnage on a TV screen. This double cameo reinforced the idea that there were two separate universes, and I’m relieved that one of them may be wrapping up.
It’s quite clear that Sony’s version of Spider-Man wasn’t complementing Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) Spider-Man, regardless of whether Sony acknowledged it or not. However, there was potential for a harmonious blend, as demonstrated by the film Spider-Man: No Way Home, which could have integrated both universes. After all, if there was ever a movie suitable to introduce Venom into the MCU, that would be the one featuring all three Peter Parkers.
In “Spider-Man 3”, you might recall, is where the character Venom made his appearance, making it an unforgettable film indeed. It’s quite plausible that they could have devised a method for Tom Hardy’s version of Venom to be incorporated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe somehow.
However, not that one. Instead, we encountered a different Spider-Man realm, featuring Morbius, Madame Web, Kraven the Hunter, and let’s not forget Venom (who has a peculiar habit of licking TV screens with “That man” on it). And, oh my, don’t forget about The Vulture in Morbius? That scene was so baffling that Michael Keaton himself couldn’t decipher his role in it.
Essentially, what I’m conveying here is my displeasure about the situation where we have two separate cinematic universes (Sony’s and Marvel’s), and Sony seems keen on merging with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, the MCU continues moving forward and blocking this potential union. It just feels like a squandered opportunity.
After Venom, They Picked Some Of The Strangest Spider-Man Characters To Make Movies Around, And I Hope There Won’t Be Any More
At first, I found it peculiar that the Sony Spider-Man Universe launched without Spider-Man himself, particularly given the title was “Venom”. However, upon reflection, this decision turned out to be logical since Venom is indeed a highly recognized and well-liked character.
When they proceeded with Morbius, I couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow, given that he was a bit unexpected for me. After all, I’m familiar with Morbius, The Living Vampire, having read his comics and recalling his appearance on Spider-Man: The Animated Series in my childhood. Yet, Morbius wasn’t the character I anticipated they would introduce from the Spider-Man universe.
Initially, I assumed that was accurate until they unveiled “Madame Web”. Upon hearing it, my first thought was something along the lines of, “Are they out of their minds?” My initial response was similar when I found out the MCU was adapting “Guardians of the Galaxy”, as I had always considered them as less popular Marvel characters compared to heavyweights like Hulk, Spider-Man and the X-Men during my childhood.
It was evident from the get-go that “Guardians of the Galaxy” would be something extraordinary based on its initial trailer. On the other hand, “Madame Webb’s” trailer was lackluster, one of the worst I’ve ever encountered. Now we have “Kraven the Hunter,” a character known for being a Spider-Man adversary. The question is, why are they focusing on Spider-Man villains like “Kraven”?
In my perspective, if I held a position of authority at Sony, I would have aggressively pursued Andrew Garfield, considered by many as the superior Spider-Man, for an alternate reality film post-“Spider-Man: No Way Home”. Cost wouldn’t have been a concern; fans are clamoring for “The Amazing Spider-Man 3” now. However, Sony opted instead for “Morbius”, “Madame Web”, and “Kraven the Hunter”. It leaves me wondering about their decision-making process.
Let’s Be Honest With Ourselves. None Of These Movies Have Been Any Good
It seems that one major flaw is that none of the films in the Sony Spider-Man Universe have been particularly enjoyable to watch. To clarify, I’m excluding the Miles Morales Spider-Verse movies from this critique, as both Into and Across are widely recognized as among the best Spider-Man films ever made.
I’m referring to the live-action films excluding Spider-Man, such as the three Venom movies, Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter. To be honest, two out of the three Venom movies weren’t terrible, but they also didn’t reach greatness.
Despite initial anticipation, Morbius was met with ridicule and ended up being re-released in cinemas… yet failed again. On the other hand, Madame Web was a complete bomb at the box office and is frequently listed among the worst films of 2024. As for now, Kraven the Hunter is struggling with a rating below 20% on Rotten Tomatoes.
It appears that the films aren’t very good according to your experience. Even though I haven’t watched “Kraven the Hunter” myself yet, I’ve seen all the others except for the first two Venom movies. Unfortunately, I didn’t find any pleasure in the remaining ones.
If these films – Madame Web, Morbius, and Venom: The Last Dance – were excellent movies, things would be different. Unfortunately, that’s not the case, and that’s simply how it turns out.
Hopefully Some Of These Characters Can Finally Make Their Way Into An MCU Spider-Man Movie
On the bright side, there’s a possibility that these characters might show up in a future Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Spider-Man film. Given my fondness for Kraven, it’s a dream come true to imagine him gracing our screens in a Spider-Man movie someday.
Actually, what I’d love to see in a Spider-Man film is a Sinister Six tale. Originally, it was planned to release something similar following The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but unfortunately, that didn’t happen.
Imagine the thrill if Tom Holland’s Spider-Man found himself persistently pursued by no less than six villains, with Kraven taking charge of the chase! Although Sony has been protective about certain characters in the past, given that the Sony Spider-Man Universe seems to be wrapping up, it might be more open to sharing these characters (particularly if a substantial fee were offered).
It’s important to note that none of this implies that these events will occur, but given the current circumstances, it seems there’s an increased likelihood of introducing new characters like Venom, Kraven, or Morbius into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After all, unexpected events do happen sometimes.
