As someone who grew up with the original Zelda games, the nostalgia that The Plucky Squire evokes is palpable. I’ve always appreciated games that allow me to figure things out independently, much like the older titles did. So, when I heard about the Streamlined Mode in The Plucky Squire, my curiosity was piqued.
The lively and spirited Squire made its debut last September. It’s been praised as an appealing tribute to classic hack-and-slash games such as The Legend of Zelda. Despite being warmly accepted by contemporary gamers, a fresh game mode offers a touch more difficulty for certain players.
In the latest update of ‘The Plucky Squire’, a new feature called ‘Simplified Gameplay’ has been introduced. This mode deviates significantly from the regular one in several aspects.
Streamlined Mode for The Plucky Squire
As reported by Video Games Chronicle from the initial announcement of The Plucky Squire, Streamlined Mode eliminates numerous in-game tutorials to provide a less guided gameplay experience.
This streamlines excess dialogue, minimizes visual cues, omits some instructional elements, and allows for more player control. Essentially, it’s the same thrilling Plucky Squire journey, but refined to provide a smoother experience for experienced gamers.
This update introduces fresh character dialogue portraits for key figures (excluding those in Streamlined Mode), addresses various general issues, and incorporates some smaller enhancements.
Additionally, it’s important to mention that the latest update is currently exclusive to PCs. While console users might get it in the near future, the developers at All Possible Futures are likely taking their time to fine-tune additional adjustments before launching the update on consoles.

Going Old School
Classic video games like the early versions of Zelda or Mega Man were praised for their ability to let players figure out gameplay mechanics with minimal use of dialogue boxes. Egoraptor’s analysis of this trend in the Mega Man series is particularly intriguing.
Over time, the approach to game design has shifted towards providing clearer guidance. However, given that The Plucky Squire is a tribute to classic action-adventure games, it’s likely that the developers aimed to create an experience where players could solve problems and discover things on their own, with less reliance on dialogue boxes and explicit instructions. Similarly, even in God of War: Ragnarok, there was criticism for Atreus solving puzzles ahead of the player’s ability to figure it out independently.
Feeling Plucky

The first game released by All Possible Futures, titled “The Plucky Squire“, garnered outstanding feedback across various platforms and was recognized in two categories at this year’s Game Awards – Best New Independent Game and Best Family Game.
Despite kid-oriented games seemingly losing their popularity compared to past times, there remains a demand for such games. Even the unexpected victory of “Astro Bot” over contenders like “Black Myth: Wukong” and “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth” for Game of the Year in 2024 left many people astonished.
The exact course for “The Plucky Squire” isn’t certain yet, but followers are eagerly anticipating the exciting plans by All Possible Futures.
The Plucky Squire is now available for PC, Nintendo Switch, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
