Blue Bloods Series Finale Should Have Killed Off A Different Character

As a gamer with over a decade of binge-watching TV shows under my belt, I must admit that the “Blue Bloods” series finale was a bittersweet affair. On one hand, it was heartwarming to see the Reagan family come together one last time, and the romantic developments were long overdue. However, the decision to off Luis Badillo felt like a cop-out, as if the writers were afraid to shake things up too much.

In the final episode of “Blue Bloods,” viewers were treated to many satisfying moments they had been anticipating. Jamie and Eddie revealed they are expecting a baby, and long-time fan favorite Danny asked Maria out on a date following heartfelt advice from his grandpa Henry about moving forward in life beyond their careers. Interestingly, despite initial plans, Season 14 included a romantic development between Danny and Maria. Even Erin chose to remarry her ex Jack, albeit off-screen after a brief reunion in Episode 17. All the Reagan grandkids gathered for a family dinner, with Frank choosing to continue serving as a police officer instead of retiring. However, one decision proved controversial among fans – the death of Luis Badillo.

The decision to impact Eddie emotionally and raise the story’s tension is certainly a logical one for the show. However, it seems rather easy and potentially timid that they didn’t kill off a character more closely tied to the Reagans, such as Anthony Abetemarco (Steve Schirripa) or even secondary Reagans like Joe Hill (Will Hochman). It’s clear why they chose not to do so – eliminating someone close but not too close serves their purpose. But think about the emotional turmoil the entire Reagan family would have faced if the writers had dared to prune the Reagan family tree more significantly. The untapped narrative possibilities resulting from such a gap in the storyline make it feel like a missed chance.

Here’s who the show should have killed off instead

Blue Bloods Series Finale Should Have Killed Off A Different Character

It was always going to be difficult to wrap up such a beloved show in a satisfying manner, and many viewers are of the opinion that the “Blue Bloods” series finale failed in several ways. Just imagine how impactful the last episode of “Blue Bloods” would have been had one of the core Reagan clan been killed off. Sure, it would have been painful to watch, but it would have also made for gripping TV. They’ve arguably all finally gotten closure regarding Joe’s death at this point, so another death in the family could have exposed some fascinating things crawling under the skin of America’s favorite policing family. An unexpected death would have been way more interesting than the marginal plot twists the Reagans were given to act out.

In another scenario, it’s something no longer debatable, but envision a world where Frank is absent from his children’s lives. Ending the series with Frank’s departure would have been an iconic moment – some viewers even anticipated this twist. However, “Blue Bloods” has always been more about providing a comforting drama rather than taking bold narrative risks. Notably, the show’s most heart-wrenching death, Linda (Amy Carlson), occurred offscreen. Although it’s intriguing to consider how such an ending could have set the stage for a potential “Blue Bloods” spin-off, the showrunner has dismissed this idea. However, Paramount Global co-CEO Brian Robbins has hinted at the franchise’s continuation. If the series does continue, here are five characters from “Blue Bloods” that could spearhead a spin-off series.
