‘Sonic 3’s Ben Schwartz Is Desperate to Play Plastic Man in the DCU

'Sonic 3's Ben Schwartz Is Desperate to Play Plastic Man in the DCU

As a movie critic who’s spent more years than I care to count sifting through the silver screen’s offerings, I must say that Ben Schwartz‘s ambition to step into the rubbery shoes of Plastic Man is nothing short of inspired. With his knack for rapid-fire humor and a penchant for playing the anti-hero, he’d make a splendid fit for DC’s elastic oddball.

As a dedicated cinephile, I can’t help but notice the occasional resemblance between some beloved characters in the comic book world. For instance, Marvel’s Deadpool bears a striking similarity to DC’s Deathstroke and G.I. Joe’s Snake Eyes. Now, it seems that Ben Schwartz, who lends his voice to Sonic the Hedgehog in the third installment, is considering a leap into the DC Universe. This might lead some to think it’s another case of copying a copy. But let me clarify, Schwartz’s character in Sonic and his potential new role are not identical; rather, he aims to bring his unique, rapid-fire wit to one of DC’s most hilarious characters – Plastic Man.

Of course, Plastic Man isn’t a rip-off of Deadpool. In fact, he appeared on the printed page over 50 years before Wade Wilson. But, the two receive a lot of comparisons because of their wacky powers, quick-witted humor, and anti-hero status. Speaking to ComicBook.com, Ben Schwartz expressed his long-time love for Plastic Man, and his extreme desire to play him in the new DC Universe. “I, of course, love the Marvel universe, but DC has a character named Plastic Man,” Schwartz began. This isn’t the first time the actor has expressed his love for the character. In fact, he’s had the same conversation with the same interviewer multiple times before. This time, he compared Plastic Man to the most popular hero of the year. Schwartz continued:

As a passionate movie critic, I’ve long pondered that this enigmatic character has all the makings of a cosmic Deadpool. His knack for humor and his intriguing history as a thief make him an irresistible figure for me. And let’s not forget his wit!

Who Is DC’s Plastic Man?

Patrick O’Brian, also known as Plastic Man, made his first appearance in “Police Comics #1” back in 1941. After an accident involving strange chemicals, he gained the ability to stretch and mold his body. Originally using these powers for criminal purposes, O’Brian had a change of heart following an encounter with a reformed Arkham Asylum inmate. He then chose to use his elastic abilities to combat crime, outsmarting his former gang and transforming into Plastic Man. Interestingly, he was initially intended to be called Elastic Man, but the name stuck due to a misunderstanding by a journalist after stopping his first crime. Given the increasingly surreal nature of James Gunn’s DC Universe, Plastic Man seems like a fitting addition to their rebooted narrative. Despite a rich history and a long-awaited movie adaptation, Plastic Man remains one of DC Comics’ lesser-known superheroes.

Currently, Ben Schwartz reappears in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, a movie that reunites beloved characters and introduces Shadow the Hedgehog, played by Keanu Reeves. The film hits theaters on December 21, wrapping up the trilogy. However, it’s not goodbye to Sonic just yet! During the interview, Schwartz hinted at a mid-credits scene. Furthermore, he confirmed that this scene may pave the way for a potential fourth movie.

For individuals who share a passion for intricate details, such as ourselves, this development expands the possibilities of character abilities within the established lore. Moreover, it offers an appealing destination for further exploration if desired, which certainly adds to the excitement.
