As a seasoned cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the intricate worlds of television and film, I find myself grappling with the disturbing allegations against Brian Jordan Alvarez, the creative force behind the critically acclaimed series “English Teacher.
Previously joint project partner Jon Ebeling, an actor frequently working with Brian Jordan Alvarez on the popular FX comedy series “[Series Name]”, has levied sexual assault allegations against Alvarez. These accusations were made by Ebeling, who also collaborated with Stephanie Koenig, Alvarez’s co-star in “English Teacher”, and dated her briefly.
As a passionate film aficionado, I recently came across some shocking revelations. In a comprehensive exposé by Vulture, Alvarez is accused of coercing me into unwanted sexual encounters, which later found its way into our 2016 web series, “The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo.” During the filming of a reenactment of this incident, I claim that Alvarez sexually assaulted me. In September, I reported this to both the Los Angeles Police Department and the Screen Actors Guild. Contrary to his assertions, Alvarez denies these allegations, claiming that I consented to our sexual interactions.
In 2024, one of the top new shows is the heartwarming comedy “English Teacher,” written and starring Alvarez as Evan, a high school teacher in Austin, Texas, grappling with his identity as a gay man in a traditionally conservative setting. Alvarez, known for his viral humor videos featuring characters such as TJ Mack, portrays a fictionalized version of himself in the series – a recurring theme since his earlier show “Caleb Gallo,” which also featured longtime collaborator and co-writer Stephanie Koenig.
The Messy Allegations Against ‘English Teacher’s Brian Jordan Alvarez
Prior to the release of “English Teacher”, Ebeling hinted at an alleged incident involving the show’s creator in an Instagram post. The post read, “My personal encounter with the creator of this show was more aligned with the storyline of ‘Baby Reindeer’ than this portrayal.” This reference was to the Netflix series ‘Baby Reindeer’, where star and creator Richard Gadd shared his accounts of being stalked by a woman named Martha and physically assaulted by a TV creator named Darrien. In an interview with Vulture, Ebeling likened Alvarez to both Martha and Darrien, while friends of Alvarez claimed that Ebeling was the equivalent of Martha in this relationship. The article presents various conflicting accusations; some claim that Ebeling was manipulating Alvarez, while others suggest that Alvarez has a history of exploiting his friends and collaborators.
Beyond speaking with Ebeling, Vulture also talked to former associates who painted a complex picture: Ebeling had romantic feelings for Koenig, whom he intermittently dated. Koenig was close friends with Alvarez, who harbored feelings for Ebeling. According to the sources, Ebeling claims he was coerced into allowing Alvarez to perform a sexual act after they watched The Wolf of Wall Street. There are contrasting accounts about this incident and its aftermath between Alvarez and Ebeling. What appears to be universally accepted is that Alvarez drew inspiration for episodes 2 and 3 of Caleb Gallo from this incident. Alvarez added a note when sending out the script for Episode 2, which stated, in part, “let me know if anything is too much, and we can make adjustments.” Ebeling admitted he decided to film the script as written because he considered Alvarez a prodigious talent.
In episode 3 of the show, there was a recreation of the intimate moment between Alvarez and Ebeling. As stated by Ebeling himself, Alvarez exploited this scene to inappropriately touch him during filming, hidden beneath a blanket.
It seems as though no one around me understands what’s happening beneath the blanket, and I find myself unable to move. I was at a loss for what to do. I found myself in a distressing situation with my director, who was acting inappropriately towards me. It was a truly awful experience.
According to Ebeling’s account, he immediately informed Koenig about an incident which he termed as rape. However, Koenig found it hard to comprehend how Ebeling could have allowed such an event to occur. In a statement released through his legal representative, Alvarez claims that Ebeling was feigning upsetness regarding the situation.
In this case, we find ourselves witnessing a dramatic performance reminiscent of traditional Kabuki theater, orchestrated by an individual labeling himself as a manipulator. His actions were aimed at twisting the facts to win favor with [Koenig].
Alavarez’s representatives informed Vulture that Ebeling agreed orally to performing a sexual act on camera, which Ebeling strongly denies. According to Ebeling, Koenig and others close to her seemed to suggest he was sending ambiguous signals to Alvarez and allowed the incident to occur. Koenig’s friends claim she remains skeptical that Ebeling was a victim of assault. Speaking on the aftermath, Ebeling states:
My friends didn’t view me as a victim, but rather this person as an abuser. It was extremely difficult for me to accept that I had been sexually assaulted. Instead, I chose to believe it was just a misunderstanding.
Previous companions and colleagues who studied together with Alvarez at USC have recounted a past filled with misusing prescription medications and alcohol, as well as exhibiting jealousy towards the male partners of his female friends (it’s claimed that he harassed one boyfriend, resulting in a restraining order being filed against him). One classmate accused Alvarez of inappropriately touching him without permission, stating, “It escalated to a point where I felt so uneasy that I didn’t want to be in the same space as him.” Alvarez denies any memory of these occurrences.
