JR Honors the Legacy of Christo and Jeanne-Claude with Cave Installation in Paris

As a gamer who has spent countless hours exploring virtual worlds and marveling at breathtaking digital landscapes, I can only imagine the sheer excitement that Christo, Jeanne-Claude, and now JR must have felt when conceptualizing their large-scale installations. The Pont Neuf Wrapped was a masterpiece that transcended the boundaries of traditional art, captivating millions and leaving an indelible mark on Paris’ skyline.

In 1985, the visionary art duo Christo and Jeanne-Claude revealed “The Wrapped Pont Neuf,” a breathtaking, grandiose artwork that draped Paris’ oldest bridge in approximately 41,800 square meters of golden material. This elaborate covering was secured using 13 kilometers of rope and 12 tons of steel cables.

Christo shared that he desired his creation to be a temporary sculpture for the very first time. Over a span of ten years and with the collaboration of more than 300 experts, this project attracted an astonishing three million viewers during its two-week display.

Forty years after, French artist JR plans to pay tribute to their legacy with another grand interpretation called “Projet Pont Neuf“, scheduled for September 2025. This time, the iconic bridge will be metamorphosed into an enchanting, cavernous spectacle.

Working together with the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Foundation, new sketches show massive stone structures spanning across the river, reminiscent of the quarries that supplied the stone for Paris’ famous architectural landmarks. The foundation explains that as the Seine returns to being swimmable and nature reasserts itself in the cityscape, Projet Pont Neuf will bring together the rugged wildness and untamed beauty with the sophisticated grace of Paris.

According to the couple’s viewpoint that art stimulates open conversation within society, JR conceives the project as a blend of homage and challenge: “The discussion sparked by a monumental artwork in a public setting is just as important as its artistic creation,” stated the artist. “Art has the power to change and refresh our perspective on the world we live in.
