Capcom: Which Legacy Franchises are Going to be Making a Comeback

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that Capcom has always been a staple in my gaming library. From the adrenaline-pumping action of Street Fighter to the heart-stopping horror of Resident Evil, their games have provided countless hours of entertainment.

It’s not surprising that Capcom, being one of the oldest gaming studios, boasts a number of well-known franchises including Street Fighter, Mega Man, and Resident Evil.

Excitedly, I can’t help but reminisce about the announcement of Onimusha: Way of the Sword at this year’s Game Awards. It seems that Capcom is keen on revisiting some of their classic intellectual properties. However, I find myself wondering which ones they have in mind for a comeback?

Capcom Reviving Their Older IP

Although series such as “Resident Evil” receive new main installments every few years, there are some older games that used to be blockbusters for Capcom but have fallen out of the mainstream gaming scene.

As reported by Video Games Chronicle, Capcom is expressing a desire to reintroduce several of its classic games, as indicated in a post on their investor relations website.

Beyond their annual rollout of significant new releases, Capcom is also concentrating efforts on reviving old franchises that have been quiet for some time without a new game launch.

Our business aims to boost its worth even more by utilizing our extensive collection of content. This means bringing back some old intellectual properties, such as those mentioned previously, to consistently create top-tier productions that are both efficient and of superior quality.

On Capcom’s official website, a poll has verified that several fans have expressed their favorite Capcom series they hope to see updated in the 2020s. These anticipated titles include Dino Crisis, Okami, and Mega Man X.

Capcom Presents

Only a select number of franchises have proven to be major successes for Capcom in recent times. The Resident Evil series has kept pace with the latest generation thanks to the launch of the RE4 remake, and fans continue to receive new installments for Monster Hunter and Street Fighter every few years.

It’s been quite some time since we’ve heard any news about the Mega Man X series, as Mega Man 11 was released back in 2018. The last game in the series that I recall is Mega Man Maverick Hunter X, which was launched for the PSP all the way back in 2006.

Apart from the highly acclaimed games that currently lead the poll, there are still several Capcom intellectual properties that many fans believe deserve a contemporary revamp. For instance, “Darkstalkers,” which was Capcom’s less well-known gothic sibling of “Street Fighter,” and the last “Ace Attorney” release was back in 2017.

Some enthusiasts speculate that the latest release of the Marvel vs. Capcom collection might be a hint towards a fresh installment in the Marvel vs. Capcom series. Given that the last game in the franchise, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, didn’t fare too well with critics, and considering the growing excitement around Marvel Rivals, it could be an opportune moment for Capcom to introduce their own Marvel-themed title.

It’s anticipated that Capcom’s upcoming major game, titled Onimusha Way of the Sword, will become available on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5 platforms in the year 2026.
