'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' Review | Jim Carrey Rules in the Best 'Sonic' Yet

As a cinephile with decades of movie-watching under my belt and a soft spot for animated adventures, I can confidently say that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a thrilling rollercoaster ride that’s sure to please fans of all ages! The film expertly blends high-octane action sequences with side-splitting humor, thanks in large part to the masterful performance of none other than Jim Carrey as both Dr. Robotnik and Gerald Robotnik.

In a surprising turn for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 exceeds the entertainment value of its predecessors, delivering an even more enjoyable experience. Jim Carrey’s dual role leaves viewers in stitches, solidifying his comedic prowess. The movie maintains a fast-paced tempo with action sequences that sizzle, while infusing just enough emotion and intrigue to keep things interesting without slowing down. However, the extended climax might be a touch excessive in its action intensity (and continues during the credits). Nevertheless, Sonic fans young and old are certain to be ecstatic about this outstanding third installment.

In a secluded prison island managed by G.U.N., situated smack dab in the heart of the Pacific Ocean, two guards were growing restless due to their monotonous duties. The place had been eerily quiet for half a century. However, that tranquility was about to be shattered when the world’s deadliest prisoner stirred back to life unexpectedly. It seemed their high-security containment system had been breached. Immediate danger signals wailed as everyone armed themselves, bracing for the imminent revival of an extraterrestrial being.

Shadow’s Fury Unleashed

Simultaneously, in the woods close to Green Hills, Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), Knuckles (Idris Elba), and their foster parents Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter) are preparing a special event. This extraordinary family is celebrating a significant achievement with their turbo-powered offspring. However, the tranquility is disrupted when a G.U.N. helicopter arrives. The helicopter’s commander, Rockwell (Krysten Ritter), requires the “aliens” for an urgent mission in Tokyo.

Sonic, Miles, and Tails eagerly take up the opportunity for some excitement, confident they can manage any mischief-maker that comes their way. However, their certainty fades when they encounter an adversary stronger than anticipated. Shadow, played by Keanu Reeves, is a vengeful hedgehog. These seemingly invincible heroes find themselves in need of aid to tackle a threat of this magnitude…from an unexpected ally instead.

In the initial act, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is propelled from a cannon in a striking fashion. Shadow’s entrance significantly elevates the intensity for every subsequent scene, demonstrating sheer brilliance. The impact of Reeves’ booming voiceover is reminiscent of Neo, delivering a high-tech CGI assault on anything in Shadow’s relentless path. His taunts towards Sonic and his companions are nothing short of electrifying. Jeff Fowler, who also helmed the first two installments, recognizes the audience’s desire for novelty. Instead of simply escalating and intensifying, the action unfolds with a grandeur befitting a superhero spectacle, as the digital characters showcase their extraordinary skills in innovative ways, within an expansive narrative framework. There’s no repetition or predictable battles to be found here.

The crux of the narrative has been explored on screen before and makes sense in this context. Think of how Brightburn was a dark take on Superman. Sonic and Shadow were shaped by their upbringing. Sonic was lucky enough to meet a kind couple who loved and cared for him. He learns to use his powers for good. Shadow had a completely different experience as G.U.N.’s alien captive. The mystery behind his boiling anger is revealed through well-timed flashbacks. He’s thirsting for vengeance and willing to use every quill of his infused with chaos-energy for savage payback.

Jim Carrey’s Dual Greatness

Fowler and the screenwriting duo, Pat Casey and Josh Miller, capitalize on Jim Carrey’s unique talents for an outstanding leading role. Previously, we’ve witnessed Dr. Robotnik exhibiting his quirky villainy. It could have been simple to give Carrey free rein to ad-lib and joke around, later editing together the funniest moments for easy laughs. However, this portrayal of Dr. Robotnik is not just a repetition of Ace Ventura’s antics. Instead, this version of Dr. Robotnik has been vanquished by a despised blue creature on two occasions. He’s a villain with an amusingly distinct mindset.

In another demonstration of Carrey’s remarkable adaptability, he brings the character of Gerald Robotnik to life, ensuring that this creation stands distinctly apart from its origin. Just as Eddie Murphy transformed into multiple characters in “The Nutty Professor”, Carrey, hidden beneath layers of prosthetics and makeup, imbues Gerald with unique qualities while maintaining the recognizable traits of the original character.

Casey and Miller skillfully distribute screen time among the large cast of characters in their script, ensuring that everyone gets a fair share without overshadowing each other. Carrey’s double antics could have easily overpowered everyone else; his strong presence has the potential to hijack any storyline. To prevent the supporting characters from becoming insignificant, they all needed their own memorable moments to shine. At no point do Knuckles, Tails, and the parents become irrelevant or fade into the background. They each play crucial roles in the plot, along with Lee Majdoub who delivers an exceptional performance as Agent Stone, proving once again his loyalty and affection for Dr. Robotnik’s character.

A Big & Busy Finale

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 reaches impressive peaks in its exhilarating conclusion, but unfortunately gets overloaded. The movie’s momentum, built by Fowler’s mastery of amplifying each element, leaves many loose ends to wrap up. This results in a chaotic rush towards resolution that strains the cinematic engine. It’s like a racecar driver slamming on the brakes repeatedly instead of smoothly slowing down. Although it’s not a major flaw considering the film’s positive aspects, it is noticeable. Be sure to stay till the end of credits – there’s plenty happening!

The movie titled “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” is a joint production by Paramount Pictures, Sega Sammy Group, and Original Film, among others. This production is set to hit theaters on December 20th, distributed by Paramount Pictures.
