Nike and HBCU Alumni Team Up for Yardrunners 5.0 Air Force 1 Release

As a proud alumna of an HBCU and a passionate sneakerhead, I can hardly contain my excitement for the Nike Air Force 1 ‘07 Low “Yardrunners,” specifically Kahlana Barfield Brown’s “Ice Cream” edition. The connection these shoes have to our beloved institutions is palpable, and it’s truly heartwarming to see such a powerful tribute to the rich history and culture of HBCUs.

Product Name: Nike Air Force 1 ’07 Low – “Yardrunners” and “VUU”

Nike persists in commemorating the rich history of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) via its Yardrunners project. Established in 2020, this program pays tribute to HBCU roots and identity by aiding their communities through compelling narratives, recruitment strategies, and merchandise that aligns with their values.

In collaboration with two notable alums from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Kahlana Barfield Brown and Dex Robinson, for Yardrunners 5.0, Nike has commissioned custom Air Force 1 designs that draw inspiration from the unique experiences and traditions of their respective alma maters.

The design by Dex Robinson is influenced by his time at Virginia Union University (VUU). The distinctive pony hair surface mirrors the power and grace of VUU’s Panther mascot. Red laces and a metal border encircling the Nike Swoosh reflect the school’s colors, while custom heel tags reading “Dear Union” and “With Love, Dex Rob” pay a heartfelt homage to the university. The insole contains a moving letter from Dex, accompanied by an image of the VUU sign, representing the bond and history shared by the institution. Interchangeable pins such as the VUU logo, Panther mascot, and DIALLO feather emblem enable personalized adjustments.

Kahlana Barfield Brown’s “Ice Cream” Air Force 1 design tells a story of unity and pride, drawing inspiration from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The upper part of the shoe is made from vintage cream leather, symbolizing the rich history of HBCUs that dates back to 1837. The brick-colored sock liner reflects the resilience and iconic buildings on these campuses. The deep brown tongue, swoosh, and outsole signify melanin and the strong bond among HBCU students. Red accents adorn the design, honoring her alma mater, sorority, and late grandmother, giving it a deeply meaningful touch. Lastly, Kahlana’s signature is featured on the heel, proudly showcasing her role in this esteemed legacy.

Beginning on December 18, you’ll find both models being launched at selected stores, while the SNKRS app will offer them for purchase from December 20 onwards.
