Sherlock Holmes isn’t just known as the most renowned fictional detective; he’s widely recognized as one of the most iconic fictional characters altogether. Created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, this clever yet peculiar English investigator first emerged in print in the novel “A Study in Scarlet” published in 1887. Since then, he has graced numerous TV shows and film adaptations, solidifying Holmes and his companion Dr. John Watson as enduring symbols of popular culture.
Even after 137 years since their debut, the dynamic duo of Holmes and Watson remain a staple on our screens. Holding the title as the most-portrayed fictional character on screen, it seems that this enigmatic detective will keep unraveling mysteries for the foreseeable future. Here’s a list of upcoming Sherlock Holmes movies and TV series in various stages of production, including those stuck in the notorious “production purgatory.
‘Sherlock Holmes 3’
One significant recent portrayal of Sherlock can be found in Guy Ritchie’s two films, “Sherlock Holmes” (released in 2009) and its sequel, “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” (2011). Both movies are set in Victorian-era London, where Sherlock and Watson take on fresh mysteries. In these films, Robert Downey Jr. played the role of Sherlock, earning a Golden Globe for his performance, while Jude Law portrayed Watson.
As a movie buff, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the third installment of the Sherlock Holmes series since as far back as 2011. The rumor mill has it that both Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law will be reprising their iconic roles, while Dexter Fletcher is set to step into Guy Ritchie’s director’s chair. However, this project has been caught up in the labyrinth of development for a staggering 13 years now. The latest update suggests that the team is still laboring away on it, and there’s no official word yet about its cancellation. Fingers crossed!
Two Sherlock Holmes TV Show Spin-Offs
Beyond just Sherlock Holmes 3, Team Downey is also developing not a single but two television series for HBO and Max. The specifics of these shows are being kept secret. However, whispers suggest that they’ll take place in the same universe as the films, although they might not include either Sherlock Holmes or John Watson.
In all likelihood, each upcoming series might introduce a new character in “Sherlock Holmes 3,” whenever it eventually gets released. It appears that the long-term success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe may have inspired Downey Jr., leading him to consider expanding his Sherlock films into a broader franchise.
‘Enola Holmes 3’
In the works penned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes initially had just one brother, an elder sibling named Mycroft. However, in a departure from the original canon, he later acquired a younger sister named Enola, who became the protagonist of a young adult book series called “The Enola Holmes Mysteries“. These books were then transformed into two Netflix originals: “Enola Holmes”, released in 2020, and its sequel “Enola Holmes 2” which premiered in 2022.
Just like the original content, these films are based in Victorian-era London. Millie Bobby Brown, star of Stranger Things, takes on the lead role as Enola, who shares her older brother’s intelligence and rebellious spirit. In these films, Henry Cavill portrays Sherlock Holmes. Due to their popularity, Netflix is currently developing a third film, tentatively titled Enola Holmes 3. However, there’s speculation about whether Cavill will return as Sherlock, considering his recent conflicts with Netflix regarding The Witcher series.
‘Watson’
Over nearly as many actors as Sherlock Holmes himself, Doctor Watson has been depicted. Some versions of Holmes might not openly acknowledge it, but they would surely struggle without Watson’s presence. In recent times, performances by Jude Law, Martin Freeman, and Lucy Liu have garnered praise.
Instead of featuring Sherlock Holmes in the upcoming series, it will instead focus solely on Watson (Morris Chestnut), who is reopening his medical practice following Sherlock’s death at the hands of their arch-nemesis Moriarty. Billed as a “medical drama blended with detective elements,” Watson is set to debut on CBS on January 26, 2025.
‘Sherlock & Daughter’
If you’re yearning for more of the legendary Sherlock Holmes and finding Watson unsatisfying, then worry not! You’ll be thrilled to know that the master detective is set to appear in an upcoming TV series titled “Sherlock & Daughter.” In this exciting new show, Harry Potter’s David Thewlis takes on the role of Sherlock, partnering with Amelia Rojas, a young American woman played by Blu Hunt. Together, they unravel a complex conspiracy that involves none other than their arch-nemesis, Professor Moriarty.
Based on the title’s hint, Amelia eventually harbors doubts that her new partner could be her long-lost dad. Spanning eight one-hour installments, Sherlock & Daughter is set to premiere on The CW and Discovery+ on January 1, 2025.
‘Young Sherlock’
Among all the upcoming Sherlock Holmes adaptations, “Young Sherlock” seems particularly promising because it delves into the detective’s past, before he was known as an iconic figure. The story unfolds in Victorian London, where 19-year-old Sherlock (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) is a student at Oxford University, tackling his first murder mystery.
Just like “Enola Holmes,” the series “Young Sherlock” is inspired by a set of young adult books. Notably, one of its producers is Guy Ritchie, who helmed the “Sherlock Holmes” films with Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role. Anticipated for release on Amazon Prime Video around 2025, this eight-episode season will feature Hero Fiennes Tiffin, the nephew of renowned actor Ralph Fiennes, playing the young detective.
Previously, a younger incarnation of the renowned detective Sherlock Holmes has graced our screens before. Back in 1985, the film “Young Sherlock Holmes,” directed by Barry Levinson known for “Good Morning Vietnam,” depicted the character at college age, locked in another thrilling confrontation with his long-standing adversary, Moriarty.
