As a longtime fan of James Gunn’s work, I have to say that the latest episode of Creature Commandos has left me absolutely spellbound. The emotional depth and complexity of Weasel’s backstory resonated with me on a profound level, reminding me of the struggles and sacrifices we all make in our lives. It’s the kind of storytelling that only Gunn can deliver, and I found myself shedding tears of empathy for this misunderstood creature.

On his Instagram post, James Gunn praised the latest “Creature Commandos” episode titled “Chasing Squirrels,” stating it’s his top pick yet. This appreciation might stem from the fact that this episode delved into the emotional past of an often-misunderstood character: Weasel, the monster voiceover by Sean Gunn, who debuted in “The Suicide Squad“. Previously, we thought Weasel was imprisoned for murdering eight children. However, it turns out that he was merely trying to protect his perceived friends from harm… until he was shot by townsfolk due to their fear of him.

In the past episodes, it’s been typical for James Gunn to craft poignant backstories with a touch of sadness for his Creature Commando characters. Thus, we shouldn’t have been surprised when Weasel’s sleep twitches were revealed as dreams about the young companions he couldn’t rescue. Yet, amid this emotional arc, the series also introduced viewers to the DCU’s Trinity: Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman, played by David Corenswet in his live-action debut. This sneak peek at the other DCU leaders is particularly noteworthy given the recent unveiling of the first Superman trailer.

Batman and Wonder Woman have been sacrificed alongside Superman.

Initially, Batman and Wonder Woman appear within a disturbing dream experienced by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). This occurs when Themysciran witch Circe (Anya Chalotra) attempts to persuade Waller that Princess Illana Rostovic (Maria Bakalova) is malevolent. Waller finds herself uncertain about the truth. Her intuition suggests Circe is deceiving her, but then the sorceress reveals a different future scenario. In this alternate reality, Rostovic has utilized her robotic guard to subjugate DC’s heroes and advance on Washington D.C.

Ahead of the debut of Creature Commandos Episode 4, we were granted an exclusive interview with the show’s executive producer and showrunner, Dean Lorey. When I inquired about his discussions with James Gunn regarding the vision for Batman and Wonder Woman, as this would be our initial glimpse into the DC Universe – Lorey shared:

In that particular order, everything seemed to pass through James. Yet, I remain uncertain about his motives for specific items. However, it’s undeniable that he was meticulous about what he desired in that sequence. Furthermore, it’s jarring to witness those things. All of this – the mystery surrounding a possible future – is extensively explored in episodes 6 and 7.

In Waller’s thoughts, her original mission to safeguard the Princess in Pokolistan is clashing with a new dilemma. At first, she assigned her team for protection purposes. However, Waller suspects that the vision experienced was too vivid to be untrue. This has led her to ask Rick Flag Sr. (played by Frank Grillo) to carry out an assassination of the princess, which would disrupt her nefarious plot. It’s worth noting that this task is problematic due to their complicated romantic history.

What else do we see in the vision?

Familiar faces from the DCU.

From Circe’s future glimpse, we learn some intriguing details: David Corenswet as Superman, an undisclosed Batman, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Hawkgirl, and Peacemaker will return in new series starting with the second season of Peacemaker in 2025. Unfortunately, they have all been sacrificed by Princess Illana, along with her allies. What’s astounding is that she seems to be joining forces with the infamous Flash nemesis, Gorilla Grodd.

However authentic does this depiction seem? This could be one possible explanation as to why James Gunn can claim that this vision doesn’t offer a genuine sneak peek into his planned Batman. Since it may still take several years until we witness DCU’s Batman in what appears to be his debut film, the upcoming DC movie “The Brave and the Bold.

Moreover, considering that Gunn has just approved a Clayface film written by Mike Flanagan, it’s possible that Batman could make an appearance in this movie as well.

There’s no limit to what could happen. Honestly, I never thought we’d delve into the ‘Creature Commandos’ this week with the DC Trinity appearing in a crossover. Yet, these unexpected twists are precisely why I’m so eager for the development of James Gunn’s universe. Trust me, you won’t believe the surprises he has in store as this story unfolds further.
