Lars Eidinger Is a Dysfunctional Father in the Trailer for Tom Tykwer’s ‘Das Licht’

As a longtime fan of Tom Tykwer’s unique cinematic vision, I am absolutely thrilled to see his return with “Das Licht (The Light)”. The trailer alone promises an exhilarating blend of emotional depth, visual spectacle, and thought-provoking themes that have become synonymous with the German auteur.

In the upcoming 2025 Berlin International Film Festival opener, “Das Licht (The Light)” by Tom Tykwer (creator of “Run Lola Run” and “Cloud Atlas”), I’m excited to immerse myself in a story about a family that was once perceived as ‘typically dysfunctional’ undergoing a profound spiritual transformation.

On Thursday, the initial trailer for the movie was released by local distributor X Verleih and Warner Bros. Germany (as detailed below). This trailer features Lars Eidinger and Nicolette Krebitz as Tim and Milena, who lead the Engels family, a family that seems to be plagued with unhappiness. As portrayed by Elke Biesendorfer, their daughter Frieda, describes their family: “We’re your typical dysfunctional German family, where everyone goes their own way without much concern for one another.

The Engels family receives aid from an enigmatic woman named Farrah (Tala al Deen), who is originally from Syria and works as a housekeeper. She becomes a part of their lives, unveiling emotions that have been concealed for quite some time. However, Farrah has her own agenda, which will significantly alter the family’s existence. In the trailer, she states, “I’ll assist them, because I require them to do me a considerable favor.” Elke Biesendorfer, Julius Gause, and Elyas Eldridge join the cast in this production.

In the trailer for his latest feature film since 2016’s “A Hologram for a King,” it appears that Tykwer hasn’t lost an iota of his distinctive visual flair. The scenes show characters traversing fantastical realms, gliding over Berlin’s River Spree, intricate dance routines skillfully coordinated, and what seems to be a city center explosion.

The light will kick off the 75th Berlin Film Festival on February 13. This marks the third time that Tykwer has opened the festival, having previously done so in 2002 with “Heaven” and in 2009 with “The International.

The light was produced by X Films Creative Pool, in collaboration with ZDF, ARP Selection, Gold Rush Pictures, Gretchenfilm and B.A. Film Production. X Distribution and Warner Bros. Germany will debut the movie in German theaters on March 20, 2025. Beta Cinema is responsible for international distribution.

The 75th Berlinale runs Feb. 13-23, 2025.
