As a cinephile with over two decades of television-watching under my belt, I can confidently say that the latest twist in NCIS has me intrigued. The cliffhanger at the end of “Humbug” has left us all guessing about Torres’ secret Christmas plans, and as someone who’s been following the show since its early seasons, I have a theory.
Warning: SPOILERS ahead for the fall finale of NCIS, “Humbug.”
Ever since Wilmer Valderrama joined the cast of NCIS as Nick Torres in Season 14, we’ve only caught glimpses of his romantic life, with Ellie Bishop being the most prominent example (she left in Season 18). He’s typically tight-lipped about his personal affairs, but it seems that could change when this long-running series returns in the New Year, according to the 2025 TV schedule. Here’s a theory I have about who his new love interest might be – a character we’ve seen before on the show.
In the season finale of NCIS, titled “Humbug”, Torres continuously fabricated fictitious Christmas plans to conceal his true holiday companion. This was hinted at in the final moments of the episode, as he was seen texting a secret recipient. Although executive producer Steven D. Binder did not disclose the identity of Torres’ new love, he did share with TV Insider that it is someone viewers are already familiar with.
It’s worth mentioning that this individual is familiar to us, as they previously appeared on our show and are set to return. Their comeback might stir up tension among the team, and there could potentially be a connection between them and one specific team member.
It’s clear that NCIS has introduced numerous characters over time, yet the hint that this character “might or might not be related” seems to strongly suggest a connection with Jessica’s sister, Robin.
In Season 20’s Thanksgiving episode “Turkey Trot”, broadcasted in 2022, viewers were introduced to Robin Knight, Jess’ younger sister. Since then, Robin hasn’t made a reappearance, but it could add an intriguing twist if she were to be dating her sister’s coworker, Torres. Given Robin’s less-than-ideal romantic history, the show would need to provide some explanation for how they began dating, and it might certainly liven things up a bit.
Introducing Robin as Torres’ girlfriend could account for his mysterious holiday plans, first claiming to spend Christmas with McGee or Jimmy, then admitting he’d be alone. This plot twist would not only serve to reintroduce Robin but also foster intriguing dialogues among Robin, Jessica, and Torres, potentially adding more layers to the Knight family’s narrative. Moreover, despite his secrecy, Torres appears content, and if this secret relationship involves Jessica’s sister, it merely strengthens the likelihood of it being genuine.
Upon the return of NCIS, we can expect further revelations concerning Torres’ clandestine romantic affairs and the true identity of his enigmatic girlfriend. The possibility that she might indeed be Robin is an intriguing prospect, despite any potential complications she may bring along.
Apart from delving into Torres’ romantic affairs, there are plenty of other exciting developments to anticipate when NCIS returns for its midseason premiere on Monday, January 25 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. Subscribers of Paramount+ can revisit all the episodes and speculate about possible love interests for Torres in the meantime.
