As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of cinematic adventures under my belt, I must say that the trailer for James Gunn’s reimagining of Superman has left me positively giddy! The DCU is finally taking flight, and it seems like they’ve got their cape caught in some serious winds.
Could that be what’s playing on the screen? It doesn’t look like a bird or a plane, but rather the highly anticipated debut trailer for
You can check out the epic first footage from Superman, which is due to fly into theaters in the United States on July 11, 2025, as the first installment of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, below.

In the revamped DC universe, James Gunn portrays Superman through a unique combination of grand actions, wit, and emotional depth. This new Superman is motivated by empathy and faith in human kindness.
Every Movie in the DCU Will “Stand By Itself,” According to James Gunn
Although the DC Universe (DCU) may spark similarities with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), James Gunn and Peter Safran, who lead the burgeoning comic book film series, have disclosed key differences between the two sagas. Unlike the MCU, which consistently introduces future projects within each movie or TV show, Gunn envisions DCU films as largely independent entities. In a recent interview with The Wrap, he elaborated on this point.
As a dedicated film enthusiast, I firmly believe each film should be self-contained and engaging without relying on prior knowledge. If ‘Peacemaker’ has connections, it’s a bonus, but it will never dictate the flow or pace of my stories, especially in movies. I prioritize crafting compelling narratives that stand alone, providing an immersive cinematic experience for every viewer.
However, let’s talk about the exciting action sequences you might expect in the Superman movie. Interestingly, Gunn draws his inspiration not from where one would typically expect but from a source that, upon reflection, fits perfectly well.
Mastering the skill to fire projectiles towards the sky is incredibly challenging, which is why we drew inspiration from movies like Top Gun: Maverick. In our production, we filmed action scenes using real drones that navigated around Superman and his fellow airborne companions. This was achieved on sound stages. We’ve got some of the tiniest, most advanced drones available today. The best pilots in the world are working with these drones to create these aerial sequences.
