Lori Loughlin Nabs First Recurring Role Since College Admissions Scandal

As a cinephile with decades of Hollywood history under my belt, I must say that Lori Loughlin‘s return to the small screen in ‘On Call’ is nothing short of intriguing. After her tumultuous journey post-college admissions scandal, it’s refreshing to see her stepping out of her comfort zone and tackling a challenging role.

Actress Lori Loughlin, known for her role as Aunt Becky in the sitcom “Full House” from 1988 to 1995, and later in the sequel series “Fuller House”, has moved from San Francisco to Long Beach. She is set to take on a new role in the upcoming Prime Video series, “On Call”. This will mark her first recurring role since the college admissions scandal. The police procedural follows two Long Beach Police Department officers, portrayed by Troian Bellisario, known for “Pretty Little Liars”, and Brandon Larracuente from “13 Reasons Why”.

Loughlin and her spouse, Mossimo Giannulli, faced charges for giving $500,000 in bribes so their daughters could be recognized as crew team recruits at the University of Southern California, despite neither having participated in the sport. This deceptive strategy helped them secure admission to the university. In 2020, Loughlin served a two-month prison term following her guilty plea for one count of conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud, as well as honest services wire and mail fraud.

Back then, I was shining on the Hallmark Channel’s hit historical drama, “When Calls the Heart,” but when news of my involvement in a scandal broke out, they decided to part ways with me from the show. Since then, I’ve taken on smaller roles in various series, one of which was an episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” that playfully mocked the scandal and my public persona.

Lori Loughlin Steps Out of Comfort Zone in ‘On Call’

In “On Call”, Loughlin takes on the character of Lieutenant Bishop, a role she finds unlike any she’s played before. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Loughlin talks about how Eriq LaSalle, whom she worked with in the 1993 TV movie “Empty Cradle”, had a big influence on her being cast in this unconventional role for her.

I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity that’s come my way. Unexpectedly, I received a phone call, offering me a role, and Eriq played a significant part in making this happen. Upon reading the script, I was blown away by its quality. The pilot episode was absolutely brilliant. Bishop is unlike any character I’ve portrayed before, and I almost questioned if they meant to offer it to me!

In the series, LaSalle is portrayed as Sergeant Lasman with extensive experience, also serving as an executive producer and directing multiple episodes. Loughlin credits LaSalle for assisting her in embodying the role of a series director.

“What he said to me was, ‘I’m gonna push you and I won’t let you fail, but we’re going to take you in a different direction than you’ve ever been.’ And he did push me, and I trusted him. He said, ‘You’re unapologetic in your performance. I want you to really lean into your strength. You’re a strong leader, and you’re no-nonsense; own that power.’ I would test it out, and he’d say, ‘You’re on the right track. We’re going to go a little further.’ He just kept pushing me and pushing me, and giving me the confidence. Once I got comfortable, then it really all came together for me.”

The series titled On Call, developed by Elliot Wolf and Tim Walsh, is set to debut on Prime Video on January 9, 2025. On this day, all eight half-hour episodes will be released for viewing. The main cast includes Bellisario, Larracuente, and Crispin Allapag in the show On Call.
