Laapataa Ladies: Kiran Rao recalls Aamir Khan told her one line from film which made her want to do it; 'I was like...'

As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for cinema and a deep appreciation for the journey of artists, I must say that Kiran Rao’s return to directing with Laapataa Ladies was not only a breath of fresh air but also a testament to the power of storytelling. Her personal connection to the film, as she admittedly felt like a Laapataa Lady herself, adds an authenticity and depth that is often missing in today’s cinema.

2024 saw the film Laapataa Ladies generating considerable buzz. Boasting newcomers such as Nitanshi Goel, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Pratibha Ranta, along with seasoned performers like Ravi Kishan and Chhaya Kadam, this production represented Kiran Rao’s directorial comeback after 13 years since her initial venture Dhobi Ghat. In a recent chat, Rao revealed that she had been feeling akin to the Laapataa Ladies herself, and it was a powerful line from the movie, delivered by Aamir Khan, that stirred her introspection and eventually led her to take on the project: ‘That one line resonated so deeply with me that I felt an overwhelming desire to be part of this production.’

In a recent conversation with RJ Rohini, Kiran Rao mentioned that Aamir Khan once shared a line from the Laapataa Ladies tale with her. This happened when Aamir served as a judge in a screenwriting contest.

Rao conveyed that the intrigue of the project’s outline struck such a chord with her that she was instantly eager to join the venture. She shared her gratitude towards Aamir, as he extended the chance for her to helm the movie.

She also mentioned having struggled for several years, feeling like a Laapataa Lady herself, trying to find the right story for her second film. Rao reflected on that moment frequently, feeling grateful for the turn it took.

Produced in collaboration with Aamir Khan, ex-spouse of Kiran Rao, the film Laapataa Ladies garnered significant praise upon its debut and was chosen as India’s submission for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards. Regrettably, it did not receive a nomination.

During the same interview, Rao expressed confidence that her next venture will not require a 13-year wait like last time. She revealed that she has been engrossed in working on her impending project and is now actively involved in drafting it.

Kiran hinted that she’s working on multiple concepts, expressing it as, “There are many dishes I’ve been simmering. I’m not sure which one will be ready to serve first, but the crowd can’t wait to find out.

In a different development, Aamir is set to appear alongside Genelia D’Souza and Darsheel Safary in the film titled Sitaare Zameen Par. It’s rumored that this project will premiere in cinemas in 2025.
