As someone who has grown up watching Saturday Night Live, I must admit that this week’s episode was nothing short of spectacular. The 5-Timers Club sketch and the annual joke swap had me laughing from start to finish. However, the most intriguing part for me was the Joke Swap segment between Colin Jost and Michael Che.
On Saturday evening, Saturday Night Live showcased all their popular tunes this week. The enduring comedy series entertained its audience with a 5-Timers Club sketch that saw nearly a dozen top-tier former hosts dishing out some unvarnished truths, and to make it even more enjoyable, they also presented the annual joke exchange. The Weekend Update segment, where Colin Jost and Michael Che pen jokes for each other to read live on air, has become one of the most buzzed-about recurring sketches in the program’s legendary run, and this year’s edition lived up to expectations.
Typically, the Internet has been predominantly discussing the uncomfortable jokes that Colin Jost had to read out on SNL this time. In this particular instance, the camera was trained on his wife Scarlett Johansson, as he made jokes about their baby’s skin color and how frequently he’d been visiting her since she gave birth. Her surprised reactions have been widely shared on social media following the sketch’s premiere, along with a video of an inadvertent curse from her. However, to me, the most surprising moments weren’t those involving Scarlett; instead, it was some other parts of the sketch that stood out as particularly shocking.
Michael Che’s reactions would be centered around his astonishment upon discovering he was set to comment on the Diddy and Jay-Z controversies. His tone of voice shifted dramatically when he understood what he was about to utter, and he gave Colin Jost a disapproving glance as each fresh revelation unraveled. To put it simply, he was clearly uncomfortable with the material he was forced to read.
Before we part ways, let me clear up a matter that’s been on many minds – the rumors surrounding Jay-Z and those Diddy events. Some folks have kept quiet, but not Mikey “The Truth Bomb” Che. Here’s the deal: Jay-Z is not guilty. In fact, he wasn’t present at those gatherings, a fact I can verify because I was there myself. Diddy, if you happen to read this, we’re still Bad Boys for life. As for the accusations against you, I would say the same thing I often did at your parties: “I’ve got your back.
There’s often discussion in comedy regarding jokes that are acceptable versus those that cross the line. Everyone has their own ideas about what topics are suitable for humor, but the success of Weekend Update’s Joke Swap shows that people’s reactions to humor can be influenced by factors beyond just the specific words used.
Typically, it’s the underlying meaning or purpose of the words in a joke that matters, along with who seems to be targeted as the victim. Che has touched on this topic previously. In these Joke Swaps, the intended target of the joke isn’t actually the person or group the joke is about, at least not directly. Instead, it appears that the victim of the joke is the person who is required to read it, which is why they can continue to exchange jokes without much resistance, even when they seem to be going too far. You might find the entire sketch enlightening as an illustration…
As a movie buff putting it in my own words: When the sketch with Che and Jost went live, it seemed like the audience wasn’t taken aback. However, from the moment the sketch ended, you could tell that Che had something to share with his buddy Jost right away. He even pointed at him, appearing to convey some thoughts that were hard to hear. I can only guess that those were about the unexpected Jay-Z joke and how it caught him off guard.
Thankfully, both individuals have discussed Joke Swaps at length in prior conversations, and they each appear to possess a keen sense of humor regarding the situation, despite being “intimidating.” They acknowledge that it’s a routine that resonates well, and I eagerly anticipate the possibility of another performance next year. Who knows where their creative minds will lead them!
Regarding Saturday Night Live (SNL), they took a break over the holidays, but they will be back in the upcoming year with fresh episodes and as-yet-unannounced hosts.
