As a connoisseur of innovative designs and a staunch advocate for sustainable practices, I found myself utterly captivated by the Flap Chair by Chamar Studio at Design Miami this year. The chair, a testament to the power of collaboration and upcycling, is not just an aesthetically pleasing piece of furniture, but a symbol of resilience for the Dalit community.
At this year’s Design Miami, the Flap Chair designed by Chamar Studio was a captivating centerpiece, drawing in both regular visitors and celebrity attendees with its unique charm.
As a gaming enthusiast speaking about my personal project, I teamed up with Chamar’s founder, Sudheer Rajbhar, drawing inspiration from fashion and intricate garment construction elements. Working hand-in-hand with the resilient Dalit community in Dharavi, I’ve taken reclaimed rubber and transformed it into a tough, eco-friendly substitute for leather.
The Flap Chair, which stands at approximately 53 inches in length and 63 inches in width with a height of 31 inches, comes in an eye-catching vermillion shade. Its design incorporates aesthetic aspects that resemble a stylish soft-leather flap handbag, showcasing a sculptural form.
Additionally, the studio not only created the mentioned piece but also designed other items using recycled rubber material. For instance, there’s the Pocket Chair in cobalt blue, the Baldric Chair in teal green, and the Woven Light lampshade. These pieces beautifully demonstrate the studio’s innovative, upcycling design philosophy that primarily focuses on rubber and leather materials.
The artworks by Chamar Studio that I mentioned earlier are also part of a larger assortment called “RUB IN,” which is available at æquō. This collection features numerous joint creations from designers worldwide, such as Linde Freya Tangelder (founder of Destroyers/Builders), Frédéric Imbert, Florence Louisy, Valériane Lazard, and Cédric Courtin (founder of Ateliers Courtin).
