As a devoted Taylor Swift fan, I can’t help but marvel at the unique charm that her life experiences have added to her music and persona. Growing up on a Christmas tree farm in Pennsylvania must have been like living in a winter wonderland all year round! While it may sound a tad unusual for a little girl to be tasked with plucking praying mantises off trees, it’s the quirky details like these that make Taylor’s story so endearing.
As the holiday season is upon us and the movie lineup fills our evenings with joy, many of us are immersed in our cherished traditions. But let me tell you, my traditions probably don’t mirror those of Taylor Swift, having grown up on an actual Christmas tree farm! The native Pennsylvanian reminisced about her childhood there with the release of “Christmas Tree Farm” in 2021, sharing how magical the holidays were, despite the occasional task of removing praying mantises from the trees – a detail that surfaced in an old interview.
Jimmy Fallon’s show, “The Tonight Show,” recently posted on YouTube an old interview from 2009’s “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” featuring the singer of “Fortnight.” In this interview, she discussed her childhood spent on a Christmas tree farm. She confessed that due to her young age, she wasn’t able to perform heavy tasks, but she did have an essential role: she was in charge of something significant.
It wasn’t actually my job to cut them down because I was, like, five. They put me to work, though. There are these bugs called praying mantises that lay eggs, and they form pods on the Douglas fir Christmas trees. It’s their favorite tree to infest. Bet you didn’t know that! That’s where I would come in. I would walk around the Christmas trees all day and pick them off and put them in, like a little basket, so that people wouldn’t have bugs in their houses. What an adorable little hobby for a child.
Swift did not mention pulling praying mantises off trees in her Christmas song, yet it doesn’t appear to be an unpleasant task for her. Considering the abundance of trees, it might have felt like a continual Christmas celebration for her. Knowing that she helped keep people free from bugs in their homes likely made this task feel meaningful or less distasteful.
In 2014, Taylor Swift shared stories about her family’s Christmas tree farm during an interview with Esquire, reminiscing about her childhood in Pennsylvania. It’s no surprise that these memories deepened her affection for the holiday season. After all, she had to pick bugs off trees as a child, but that doesn’t diminish my understanding of why she cherishes this time of year so dearly.
Growing up there felt quite unusual, yet it instilled in me an extraordinary enthusiasm for autumn and the approaching holidays. My companions often groan when I bring up the arrival of fall, jokingly telling me, ‘You must be an elf!’
It’s uncertain which type of Christmas tree Swift prefers or where she sets one up annually. However, given her history of checking trees for praying mantises, it seems likely that she continues this habit out of long-standing routine. Considering her upbringing on a Christmas tree farm, her feelings towards the holiday could range from deep affection to reluctance based on her tolerance level during the season, but it appears she still cherishes it.
Regrettably, despite Swift’s affection for the festive season, it didn’t have much impact on her record-breaking tour. During the Eras Tour, she sang several unexpected songs from her deep catalog, but “Christmas Tree Farm” wasn’t one of them, even though some concerts were held in December. Moreover, she hasn’t re-released her holiday EP, The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection, yet. Though the Eras Tour has ended, there’s a chance that the holiday EP might receive a re-recorded version as part of her future projects. Nevertheless, Swift’s Christmas spirit will persist, even though it was accompanied by numerous encounters with praying mantises.
