As a seasoned movie enthusiast who’s seen more than my fair share of sequels, I must admit that I find myself in a peculiar predicament with the return of “Squid Game” for Season 2. It’s like being faced with a second helping of your favorite dessert, knowing full well that the first slice was simply divine.
In a new twist, Squid Game has come back for its second season, four years after its initial debut, and has found itself in an intriguing predicament – a flawless series that is not quite flawless due to the sheer brilliance of its precursor. Early reviews on the follow-up of Squid Game indicate that Season 2 would have been even more impactful if Season 1 hadn’t been so outstanding, which was inevitably a challenge given the exceptional nature of the original installment.
The expectations for a strong follow-up to “Squid Game” were tremendous, yet creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk not only worked on Season 2 but also Season 3 simultaneously – filmed back-to-back. Consequently, it appears that the new episodes might struggle slightly due to now being positioned as the “middle” part of the storyline.
In Season 2, Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) resumes his mission to dismantle Squid Game from within by reentering the lethal series of children’s games which previously pushed him to the brink of death. Yet, this time around, his intense yearning for retribution against those responsible for Squid Game propels him into a perilous and nerve-wracking predicament. The contests this season remain as merciless, but the participants also share deeper connections; for instance, a pregnant woman learns that her baby’s father is competing in the games alongside her.
One striking aspect of the second season is that Gi-hun finds himself controlling the fates of other contestants while struggling to survive again. Yet, due to its cliffhanger ending and role as a prelude to future events, Season 2 leaves viewers with a sense of incompleteness as we eagerly await the resolution in Season 3.
What Have Reviews Said About ‘Squid Game’ Season 2?
To date, Squid Game has received a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, yet it’s important to note that the number of critic reviews is quite limited. As of now, merely 4 critics have shared their thoughts, while viewers are eagerly awaiting the chance to dive into this highly anticipated series. Nevertheless, there appears to be a consensus among those who have seen it so far.
Pierce Conrad from South China Morning Post found himself thoroughly enjoying the latest season and gave it a thumbs up due to its abundance of unexpected twists and nail-biting suspense. However, he expressed his disappointment at having to wait for Season 3 to wrap up the storyline. On the other hand, Tessa Smith from Mama’s Geeky brought attention to the intriguing paradox that could emerge in future reviews as a result of Season 2’s unique qualities.
As a film enthusiast, let me share my thoughts: “It was decent, but not exceptional. The storyline was building up to something truly captivating, only to leave us hanging at the end with a cliffhanger. There were moments when the main plot seemed to take a backseat, even though it’s intriguing and holds promise. Sadly, it falls short compared to the first season. Regardless, I’m eagerly anticipating what comes next.
Following the phenomenal, unprecedented success of its debut season, it’s safe to say that Squid Game Season 2 finds itself in an unusual predicament – being a series with the potential to outshine many others, but unable to quite match up to its own stellar past. Time will tell if audiences share this viewpoint.
