As a film enthusiast with a soft spot for complex relationships, I must say that JD and Margo from Netflix’s No Good Deed left quite an impression on me. Their toxic dynamics reminded me of a few tumultuous relationships I’ve witnessed in my own life – albeit thankfully not as extreme!
The following article contains SPOILERS for No Good Deed, which premiered as part of the 2024 Netflix schedule. If you’d like to catch up, you can check out all eight episodes with a Netflix subscription right now.
Speaking of toxic relationships on television, one that immediately springs to mind is the duo of JD and Margo from Netflix’s “No Good Deed.” Interestingly enough, when I talked to Luke Wilson, who played JD, he offered an unexpected perspective on their relationship, which has piqued my interest and made me eager to revisit the series.
Originating from the mind of Liz Feldman, known for creating intriguing characters who stir emotions, such as Margo and JD in “Dead to Me,” certainly live up to this reputation. By the end of Episode 8, it’s clear that their house has been engulfed in flames, yet both characters survive – with JD resuming his acting career and Margo being taken into custody. As I was curious about whether there might be a second season or more to their story, I posed a question to Luke Wilson: would he think their paths would cross again? His response was affirmative, hinting at some surprising developments in their relationship – revealing that JD may have a strong dependency on Margo.
It seems to me that JD depends quite a bit on Margo. To put it another way, I was discussing with Linda about a friend of mine whose wife essentially acts like a stylist and life coach. In other words, she’s the one who advises this man on what to wear, how to cut his hair, and generally guides him in his daily life. This is similar to the relationship between JD and Margo, where Margo seems to be the one directing JD’s lifestyle choices.
As a cinephile, I must admit that it’s not entirely shocking if we’re being honest. Margo, portrayed in “No Good Deed,” certainly gave off strong gold-digger vibes, leaving me questioning alongside Luke Wilson, “Who on earth is this person?” when Linda Cardellini stepped into her shoes. However, it’s quite common to see a co-dependent relationship unfold on screen, especially when characters share intertwined lives like Margo and the character portrayed by Linda. The need for each other to simply function becomes a recurring theme.
Wilson also remarked on this, stating that if their tale continued, these two characters would inevitably have to cross paths somehow – be it discussing shared custody of a child or another situation.
It seems reasonable that, when it comes to season two, these characters should effectively co-parent their child amicably and manage interactions with each other’s partners.
Upon reflection, it seems that none of the relationships portrayed in “No Good Deed” are entirely healthy. The intense argument between the Morgans in Episode 7 is a clear example, as is Dennis and Carla’s habit of hiding things from one another. In many ways, the show’s title, “No Good Deed,” is aptly reflected in these complex dynamics.
Revisiting the series now, I find myself curious to delve deeper into Margo and JD’s relationship. With Wilson’s insights in mind, maybe I’ll gain a better understanding of their dynamics and see how they complement each other. Or, it could be that my opinion of them might worsen even further. Time will tell!
Despite some concerns about the unhealthy nature of its characters, the series “No Good Deed” received positive feedback from critics and was a popular choice on Netflix. As a result, many viewers seem to be captivated by these complex relationships. If another season is produced, we may witness even more of these couples, along with their intriguing (and potentially harmful) antics.
