As a lifelong film enthusiast with a particular fondness for iconic scores that can transport me back to my childhood memories, I find myself captivated by John Williams‘ Superman theme from the 1978 movie. While the maestro has an impressive repertoire, this theme stands out as my favorite due to its powerful and evocative nature.
During a recent press event for the upcoming Superman movie in 2025, I had the opportunity to speak with director James Gunn about his approach to using Williams’ signature composition. His passion for the theme was evident as he discussed the delicate balance of honoring the past while creating something new and fresh.
Gunn’s decision to collaborate with composer John Murphy on a unique take on the Superman theme is exciting, especially since Murphy began working on the music before the script was even finished. I can’t wait to hear how Murphy’s modern interpretation intertwines with the original Williams score in the film.
Intriguingly, Gunn mentioned that the upcoming DCU, which he officially launched with the animated series Creature Commandos, will set up new characters that we can expect to see in upcoming movies and shows, including Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr., who plays an antagonist in Superman and Peacemaker Season 2. It’s shaping up to be a thrilling time for DC fans, thanks to the visionary work of James Gunn, Peter Safran, and their collaborators.
On a lighter note, I can’t help but wonder if Rick Flag Sr.’s antagonistic role in Superman will lead to a classic superhero showdown between him and the Man of Steel – perhaps resulting in an epic remix of the Superman theme that would make John Williams proud!
John Williams’ timeless melody from the 1978 film “Superman,” directed by Richard Donner, could be my top pick among his impressive works. This is quite a statement considering his other masterpieces like those from “Jaws,” “E.T.,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Jurassic Park,” and the Harry Potter series. Even Jude Law, who starred with Williams in “Skeleton Crew,” found it challenging to choose a favorite. However, the inspiring theme for Superman manages to rise above the rest for me. And James Gunn, director of the upcoming “Superman” film in 2025, concurs.
At a recent press gathering connected to the unveiling of the Superman trailer, which incorporates elements of John Williams’ iconic theme by John Murphy in its soundtrack, I had the opportunity to pose a question to Gunn regarding his choice to incorporate this well-known Williams composition. Prior to discussing its role in the upcoming DC film, Gunn shared with TopMob that he indeed utilized the signature Williams composition.
From the outset, my intention for the music was clear in my mind after much contemplation. The question is whether we’re planning a fresh approach or sticking with the Williams theme – a soundtrack I hold dear since childhood. You see, the music from the Donner film left an indelible impression on me, more so than any other aspect of that movie. However, our work was aimed at striking a balance between reverting to the past and moving towards the future.
I must admit, recreating the iconic Superman theme authentically is quite a daunting task. The legacy of Richard Donner’s film has been a guiding star for subsequent Superman movies, such as Bryan Singer’s “Superman Returns.” While it attempted to honor Donner’s work, I believe it might have aimed too high in terms of replicating the original’s essence, ultimately failing to establish its own unique identity on the silver screen.
James Gunn wants his Superman to stand on its own. So, as he continued to explain to TopMob:
John Murphy is a musician I enjoy collaborating with greatly. He began crafting the music for the project before the script had been fully written. Among the initial recipients of the script were Murphy, Peter Safran, and a few others, in order to initiate the musical composition process. I expressed my desire to incorporate a rendition of the Williams score, while also creating our own unique interpretation of it. What’s truly impressive is how this blends seamlessly into various other compositions throughout the film. Some of these compositions echo the Williams theme, while others are purely John Murphy’s original creations. This recurring pattern adds depth and beauty to the movie as a whole.
Gunn informed us that John Murphy dedicated two years to crafting the “Superman” theme, and you can hear a snippet of it here.
In the world of DC, James Gunn’s universe (DCU) will expand further with the introduction of Superman. This expansion was foreshadowed by Gunn’s animated series, Creature Commandos, which is set to conclude in January. Characters introduced in this series, such as Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr., are expected to appear in upcoming DC films and television shows. This includes his role as an antagonist in Superman and Peacemaker Season 2. The current state of DC entertainment is particularly thrilling due to the efforts of James Gunn, Peter Safran, and their team.
