As a long-time Marvel fan and avid viewer of both the comics and the MCU films, I must admit that the ending of “What If…?” left me with a bittersweet feeling. On one hand, the series offered an incredible array of characters and scenarios that expanded the MCU in ways we never thought possible. On the other hand, the tantalizing glimpse of Storm wielding Mjölnir was just a taste of what could have been if more mutants had been included earlier.
I remember the excitement I felt when X-Men 97 brought mutants back to prominence and the nostalgia that washed over me with the appearance of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine. The idea of seeing these characters interacting within the MCU is a dream come true for many fans, myself included.
Bryan Andrews’ comments about the potential return of What If…? have me hopeful that we may one day see more of our favorite mutants in alternate universe scenarios. I can only imagine the chaos that would ensue if Wolverine were to appear in an episode – not to mention Hugh Jackman lending his voice talents!
In the meantime, I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for a triumphant return of What If…? and hoping that Marvel Studios will find a way to incorporate more mutants into their ever-growing universe. And maybe one day, we’ll even get to see Wolverine team up with Deadpool again – who knows, they might even crack a joke about how they’re both the best there is at what they do!
As a devoted fan and movie reviewer, I must express my thoughts on the thrilling conclusion of Marvel Television Animated Series, “What If…?” The show has now bid adieu after three action-packed seasons, wrapping up its epic run just last week. For enthusiasts of both the comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), there were numerous unexpected twists that kept us on the edge of our seats. However, one moment that truly stood out was the appearance of Storm, a powerful mutant and X-Men member, wielding Mjölnir in the second-to-last episode of the series.
While the revival of Mutants has been beautifully portrayed in the “X-Men 97” series, seeing one appear within an MCU-related television show was nothing short of groundbreaking. This is particularly significant given that the previous appearance of an X-Man in any MCU project was Hugh Jackman’s iconic portrayal of Logan in “Deadpool & Wolverine.
In an interview with Agents of Fandom, director Bryan Andrews from the “What If…?” series mused that if he had been aware of Marvel Studios’ extensive access to various Mutant characters, the final season of the animated show could have taken a completely different direction. He hinted at potentially incorporating one highly sought-after character into the storyline.
Reflecting back on our latest project, I can’t help but feel a pang of regret. As someone who has been involved in production for quite some time now, I know full well that setting up and executing these complex projects takes time, patience, and a good dose of foresight. In retrospect, it seems as though we could have squeezed more mutant characters into this season, but at the time, we had no inkling that Disney would be bringing back all the Fox properties. It’s a bit frustrating to think about the Hugh Jackman cameo we missed out on, but such is the nature of showbiz.
That being said, I remain optimistic for the future. Perhaps there may be more opportunities to explore alternative storylines in the What If…? universe, and if that’s the case, I’m looking forward to collaborating with those talented folks again. At least we were able to secure Storm for this season, which is a major win in its own right. All in all, it’s important to remember that every project presents its own unique challenges and opportunities, and I’m excited to see where the next one takes us.
The Introduction of the X-Men to the MCU Might Reinvigorate the Future of ‘What If…?’
The three seasons of What If…? presented a wealth of MCU film characters in unique situations, but it’s evident that they barely scratched the surface when it comes to the expansive possibilities of world-building. This becomes even more apparent as the X-Men and mutants in general take on greater roles in the interconnected universe of movies and TV series. Although Storm made a strong appearance in the final episodes, the introduction of new characters at Marvel Studios could potentially lead to a second season for What If…?
Fans are thrilled at Bryan Andrews’ hint about potentially seeing Wolverine in a different universe storyline within the MCU, given the huge popularity and comedic potential of the character following the success of Deadpool and Wolverine. Additionally, the prospect of Hugh Jackman lending his voice to the role adds even more excitement to this possibility.
As a longtime fan of the “What If…?” series, I must admit that its current hiatus has left a void in my weekly viewing routine. But being a Marvel enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of the franchise over the years, I can’t help but feel optimistic about the future of this captivating animated series. With my extensive knowledge of Marvel comics and my personal preference for characters like Wolverine and other Mutants, I am certain that the creative minds behind Marvel Studios will find a way to breathe new life into the series by introducing fresh characters that will keep things exciting and engaging. Whether it’s through an animated series or another format altogether, I eagerly await the day when “What If…?” makes its triumphant return to my screen.
