Kate Beckinsale Details Years of On-Set Harassment: “Complaining About Abuse Should Not Beget More Abuse”

As a long-time fan of Kate Beckinsale‘s captivating performances and enchanting charm, it’s heartbreaking to learn about her harrowing experiences in Hollywood. It feels like a betrayal of trust, not just for an actress as talented as she is, but for any woman who dares to dream and strive for success in this industry.

Beckinsale’s bravery in sharing these stories shines a light on the darker side of Hollywood that has been long hidden from the public eye. The fact that she has endured such treatment throughout her career, despite her immense talent and popularity, is a testament to the resilience of strong women who refuse to be silenced.

What’s even more disheartening is the realization that this issue isn’t limited to one set or one man; it’s systemic and pervasive. It’s like a game of Hollywood Whisper Down the Lane, with each whisper becoming louder, more harmful, and more damaging.

On a lighter note, I can’t help but wonder if the men responsible for these atrocities have ever watched one of Kate’s films where she plays an ancient vampire who rises against her oppressors. If only they knew then what we know now. Maybe they would think twice before crossing paths with such a powerful force!

Kate Beckinsale speaks openly about the decades of mistreatment and misconduct she’s experienced across multiple film sets during her career.

Yesterday, I shared a heartfelt message on my Instagram, expressing that talking about this matter now seems particularly relevant and crucial, in light of the recent accusations made by Blake Lively against my co-star from our project “It Ends With Us“.

I’ve never interacted with either of them nor was I present during their filming, so I can’t comment on the matter. However, what I want to emphasize is that the situation has brought to light the system that gets activated when a woman voices concerns about something offensive, distressing, harmful, or problematic within this industry.

In a nearly five-minute video, the actress known for Canary Black shared stories of multiple instances where she was harassed during her career. On one movie set, she was disrespectfully labeled as “that cunt” after she confronted a male co-star who she claimed was often intoxicated on set every day.

She expressed that he appears to be experiencing some difficulty, and I genuinely empathize with his struggles. However, we, including the crew, were left waiting for him to memorize his lines for six hours each day. As a result, I’m missing out on spending time with my daughter in the evenings throughout the entire filming process. The studio’s solution was to provide me with a bicycle so I could ride around the studio lot during my wait. Unfortunately, I was also insulted and labeled as a derogatory term, such as a ‘cunt’ and a ‘bitch.’ During one particular take, I was even called ‘you stupid bitch.’

Later on, Beckinsale recounted an instance where a group of individuals were in front of her, questioning, “How can we make her appealing?” Additionally, she mentioned that on two separate occasions, she was subjected to a stringent diet and workout regimen so intense that it caused her to miss her periods entirely.

The actress from Underworld shared that she experienced not one but two potentially dangerous confrontations on different film sets. One of these instances involved a male colleague inflicting physical pain during a fight scene. When she voiced her injury, Beckinsale claimed she was shunned or excluded by the cast and crew following this incident.

At times, some actors seem to find pleasure in the fact that they can legally inflict harm on a female character during fight scenes,” Beckinsale explained. “In my case, I suffered injuries severe enough for MRIs to confirm it. What followed, however, was a situation where I was manipulated and made to believe that I was at fault, blamed and excluded from social events with the cast. I was ignored and avoided as soon as I raised concerns about the issue.

In another part of the Instagram video, the star of “Fool’s Paradise” reminisced about being compelled by their publicist to participate in a photoshoot just a day following a miscarriage.

Beckinsale shared that during their discussion, she explained, “I’m not able. I’m bleeding. I feel uncomfortable about having to undress in front of strangers and participate in a photoshoot at this moment. I’m experiencing a miscarriage.” However, the response was, “You must do it, or you’ll face legal action.

Beckinsale pointed out that the persistent harassment experienced by women on film sets is nothing new.

She shared that she has numerous experiences akin to this one. When she was 18 years old, someone she deeply trusted on set made an inappropriate advance towards her. She confided in the lead actress, who is renowned for advocating for women’s rights, and shared what had happened, only to be dismissed with “No, it didn’t happen.” Overwhelmed and in tears, she approached another actress, disclosing that she had been assaulted by this man. Again, her account was met with skepticism, as she was told “No, you haven’t been assaulted.

The actress from “The Prisoner’s Daughter” remarked, “This issue has been persisting for a long time, and what’s truly disheartening is that many men claim, ‘Things were much different in the past, you know, the environment was so different and it’s improved so much.’ But it certainly hasn’t!

As a gamer, I’d say it like this: On movie sets, it’s almost as if a woman’s voice gets drowned out. And when we do manage to speak up about a genuine issue, it feels like speaking up only lands us in trouble, like someone just said, “You’re in hot water now.

She stated, ‘If you bring it up, you’re in trouble.’ Instead, it should be about understanding and then you’re considered cool. That needs to change. It must stop. I appreciate Blake Lively for bringing attention to the fact that this isn’t an old issue that no one experiences. It persists. And when it does occur, a system is often put in place to completely ruin you.

In the detailed description accompanying her post, Beckinsale underscored that such issues are prevalent across all industries, yet they’re somewhat more conspicuous within ours.

The actress expressed that it’s unfair for speaking out about mistreatment to result in further mistreatment, especially in a professional setting where protection should be absolute. She also emphasized that it shouldn’t be demanded of women who have suffered harm, disrespect, pain, humiliation or any form of abuse (often with numerous witnesses) to act as if nothing happened and endure the consequences, or face backlash for having experienced abuse in the first place.

As a passionate advocate, I ended my post with a heartfelt sentiment: “The toll of this issue is heartbreakingly high, and many of the victims are people I’m fortunate to know. It’s up to all of us, men and women in our industry, to take a stand and work towards eradicating it forever.
