As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of Tom Clancy’s novels, I was both excited and apprehensive when I heard about the adaptation of “Without Remorse.” Having grown up with Jack Ryan and his entourage of characters, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia for the good old days. However, as someone who has also been following the ever-evolving landscape of film adaptations, I knew that change was inevitable.
Upon watching “Without Remorse,” I found myself torn between my love for the source material and the need to appreciate the creative liberties taken by Stefano Sollima and Taylor Sheridan. The action sequences were undeniably impressive, and Michael B. Jordan’s portrayal of John Kelly was nothing short of captivating. Yet, I couldn’t help but feel that the film fell short in delivering a truly unique and memorable experience.
The decision to modernize the setting and alter some key characters seemed well-intentioned, but it ultimately felt like a missed opportunity to explore the political climate of the Vietnam War era. The humorless tone and formulaic storytelling also detracted from what could have been a more engaging and thought-provoking narrative.
In the end, I found myself longing for the days when adaptations were more faithful to their source material while still managing to tell a fresh and compelling story. Perhaps in the upcoming “Rainbow Six” adaptation, we’ll finally see the balance that I crave as a lifelong Clancy fan.
Joke: And if you ask me, the real challenge for the writers of “Rainbow Six” will be figuring out how to make a team of elite operatives even more diverse than the cast of the Broadway production of “Hamilton.
Tom Clancy, a highly accomplished and prosperous author in the literary realm, has sold over 100 million copies of his novels during his distinguished career. Some of these books have been transformed into captivating adaptations by both television and film industries, featuring iconic characters such as Jack Ryan and John Kelly. Notable movie successes like “The Hunt for Red October” and “Clear and Present Danger”, along with popular streaming series like “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”, demonstrate Hollywood’s enduring fascination with bringing Clancy’s beloved protagonists to life on screen.
2021 saw Michael B. Jordan stepping into the action-packed thriller “Without Remorse,” a new take on the beloved novel, which served as an origin story for the tenacious character who became a mainstay in the “Ryanverse” franchise. Although the adaptation deviated from the original source material, it showcased a stellar performance by Jordan. The acclaimed actor is set to reprise his role in the forthcoming sequel, focusing on the events of Clancy’s “Rainbow Six.
Michael B. Jordan Headlines the Exhilarating Adaptation
Following his stellar performances in box office hits like “Creed” and “Black Panther”, Michael B. Jordan solidified his status as one of Hollywood’s captivating leading men by portraying the seasoned U.S. Navy SEAL John Kelly in the 2021 action thriller “Without Remorse”. This film, based on Tom Clancy’s bestselling novel, marked a big screen adaptation and served as an origin story for the esteemed fictional character. The movie vividly brings the Ryanverse literary character to life, with Jordan’s portrayal of Kelly pursuing revenge against Russian assassins who killed his pregnant wife and fellow team members.
In this rephrased version, the story revolves around a Navy SEAL named Kelly, who is grieving over the loss of his wife. To seek vengeance and uncover the truth behind her death, he joins forces with Lieutenant Commander Karen Greer (Jodie Turner-Smith) and CIA agent Robert Ritter (Jamie Bell). Their investigation unexpectedly exposes a massive international conspiracy that could potentially ignite a war between the U.S. and Russia. As Kelly navigates through this dangerous mission, he is confronted with the challenge of determining his allegiances while ensuring the safety of his nation, setting him on an extraordinary path towards self-discovery and heroism.
‘Without Remorse’ Faces Major Production Woes
Prior to its release in 2021, the movie “Without Remorse” faced significant production issues and a challenging development phase. Interestingly, plans for a film adaptation have been ongoing since the novel was initially published back in 1993. Notable actors like Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, and Tom Hardy were all considered to play John Kelly in this Hollywood remake over different time periods. Eventually, in 2018 (which marked 25 years since the action thriller was first announced), Michael B. Jordan was cast as the Navy SEAL and agreed to star in two films.
Previously, Willem Dafoe portrayed John Kelly (originally Clark) opposite Harrison Ford’s Jack Ryan in the 1994 film “Clear and Present Danger.” Later, Liev Schreiber took on the role of the heroic character in “The Sum of All Fears” (2002), alongside Ben Affleck. Following Jordan’s involvement, Taylor Sheridan was enlisted to revise the original screenplay. This collaboration brought Sheridan back together with his former collaborator Stefano Sollima from “Sicario: Day of the Soldado,” who eventually directed “Without Remorse.” Amazon Studios aimed to launch a franchise focusing on Kelly, with Jordan also set to feature in “Rainbow Six.
‘Without Remorse’ Fails to Remain Faithful to the Novel
In the film version of “Without Remorse,” some significant differences were made compared to Tom Clancy’s original novel. Instead of taking place during the Vietnam War in 1970, it was set in the contemporary political climate of 2020. In the movie, Kelly’s wife Pam was brutally murdered by Russian assassins as retribution for a covert operation his team had executed. This tragic event served as the catalyst for the main storyline and fueled the Navy SEAL’s quest for vengeance. However, in contrast to the novel, Pam is portrayed as a drug courier whom Kelly develops feelings for following the death of his wife Patricia, who perished in a car accident.
As a passionate movie buff, I must say that when it comes to the action-packed thriller “Without Remorse,” directors Sollima and Sheridan took some creative liberties compared to the original novel. One significant departure is the character of John Kelly, who in Tom Clancy’s bestseller is described as a blond, white man of Irish descent. However, in this adaptation, Kelly is portrayed as a Black man, handsome and incredibly physically fit.
Another notable difference lies with Karen Greer, Kelly’s loyal ally in the book, who does not make an appearance in the movie. Furthermore, the backstory for his involvement in the dangerous missions has undergone some changes. Critics generally agreed that these alterations contributed to the film’s pace and intensity, but ultimately, they weren’t enough to ensure its success.
The action-thriller “Without Remorse” made its debut on Amazon Prime Video on April 30, 2021. In its first month, it was viewed by approximately 4.8 million households, but received mixed reviews from critics. Despite the film’s visually stunning action sequences, gripping suspense, and strong performance by Michael B. Jordan, its predictable plot and overused genre tropes fell flat with viewers. The movie currently holds a 45% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 5.8 rating on IMDb. In January 2023, a film adaptation of the novel “Rainbow Six” was approved, with Jordan set to return as John Kelly. You can now stream “Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse” for free on Freevee.
