As a seasoned film buff with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must confess that I’ve seen some truly bizarre cinematic creations, but none have left me as utterly perplexed and bewildered as the infamous 2013 anthology comedy, Movie 43. The film is a veritable smorgasbord of sketches, short films, and raunchy humor that defies all logic and reason, making it an acquired taste that few audiences have dared to acquire.
I’ve watched my fair share of comedies that push the envelope, but Movie 43 is a league of its own. It’s like a twisted carnival ride where you’re not quite sure what to expect around each corner – one minute you’re laughing at poop jokes, the next you’re cringing at awkward family dynamics, and then you find yourself questioning the sanity of the filmmakers who thought superhero speed dating would be a good idea.
To my dismay, the critical reception for Movie 43 was as abysmal as its plot, with critics calling it horrific, unfunny, and “mind-numbingly awful.” The film’s Rotten Tomatoes score is an embarrassing 5%, which is fitting given the subject matter.
For those brave souls who dare to venture into the depths of Movie 43, I must warn you that it may leave you questioning your life choices and sanity. But hey, as they say, laughter is the best medicine – and if nothing else, this film will certainly provide a hefty dose of both cringe and tasteless humor in equal measure.
Now for a little joke to lighten things up: Why did the Movie 43 director go bankrupt? Because his films were so bad, they were box office poison!
In 2013, Gerard Butler became part of a star-studded ensemble for an anthology comedy titled “Movie 43,” which boasted 13 directors and 19 writers but lacked a coherent plot. This peculiar production, known as “Movie 43,” has garnered the lowest rating among Gerard Butler’s films on Rotten Tomatoes. With its crude humor, wandering narrative, and absurdity, “Movie 43” is an acquired taste that most viewers have failed to appreciate. Both critics and audiences have been harsh in their criticism of the film. Despite its numerous flaws, the execution alone warrants a rating higher than the 5% it currently holds.
Movie 43 is a collection of unconnected comic skits and brief films, all presented as if they were the brainchild of a producer (Dennis Quaid), who frantically tries to persuade a studio executive about his idea for a new film starring some of Tinseltown’s biggest names. With a mix of humor and vulgarity, Movie 43 is an unpretentious production that doesn’t aim to rise above its own modest standards. Essentially, it’s a zany, absurd project that was never intended to be taken seriously. In essence, Movie 43 can be seen as a comical fusion of slapstick humor and risqué excitement, tailored for audiences who appreciate the style of The Three Stooges and Shallow Hal.
A Movie Crafted for Offense… And It Succeeds
Movie 43” appears to cater best to individuals who enjoy a quick chuckle (people high on marijuana, teenage boys, or viewers who are preoccupied with other activities). Produced by the same mind behind “It’s Pat” and “Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd”, “Movie 43 ” is filled with silliness, lacks intelligence, and relies heavily on crude humor. The issue lies in that some jokes fall flat, and there are quite a few scenes that make you cringe secondhand. Interestingly enough, this is intentional.
This movie isn’t suitable for everyone due to its adult-oriented humor. It features bathroom humor, troubled family dynamics, a twist on superhero romance, and an excessive amount of genitalia-related jokes – all of which cater to those who appreciate such comedy.
The Critical Rating Is in the Toilet… Which is Fitting
It might be fair to consider that the movie doesn’t have grand aspirations, but critics would likely challenge this view based on its Rotten Tomatoes rating. Critics labeled it as dreadful, unfunny, and “mind-numbingly awful.” Despite the film’s heavy use of bathroom humor, this certainly wasn’t good news for the cast and crew. In fact, this offbeat production featuring Gerard Butler was one of the lowest-rated projects for several stars such as Naomi Watts, Kate Winslet (tied with A Kid in King Arthur’s Court), Chris Pratt, Liev Schreiber, and Hugh Jackman. The audience rating for Movie 43 isn’t much higher at 24%, indicating that even the viewers found the project puzzling.
If you’re open to a rather forgettable 90-minute movie experience, I recommend checking out the American version of this film. The character of Dennis Quaid as an overzealous producer doesn’t offer much in terms of plot, but it presents a more structured chaos compared to its foreign counterpart. In the US version, three teenagers embark on a quest to discover the wildest movie ever made, titled “Movie 43.” As they search for this mysterious film online, they come across various sketches that make up the movie, but unlike in the American version, these sketches lack any connection or cohesion. They are just random films found on the deep web, which seems like a senseless replacement and takes away from the overall consistency of the film.
Essentially, the movie known as Movie 43 was designed to cater to a particular niche group of viewers. Instead of providing a storyline to connect the ‘funny’ parts, they opted for a direct approach. This strategy, however, didn’t prove fruitful for its creators. Similar to how Bialystock and Bloom accidentally produced a successful flop with their worst play ever, the creators of Movie 43 aimed to create an extremely offensive film that would please their audience. Unfortunately, they ended up with a colossal failure that has become a benchmark for Hollywood’s biggest stars in terms of epic failures. Despite its shortcomings, it did manage to fulfill its purpose. For those who appreciate crude and tasteless humor, Movie 43 offers plenty of it.
