As a seasoned movie-goer with over three decades of film-watching under my belt, I can confidently say that Viola Davis‘ upcoming action thriller “G20” is shaping up to be an unmissable addition to the cinematic landscape. With her EGOT-winning pedigree and a cast that includes heavy hitters like Anthony Anderson, Clark Gregg, and Antony Starr, this film promises to deliver the kind of edge-of-your-seat action that has been sorely lacking in recent years.
Having followed Davis’ career since her breakout role on “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody,” I am beyond excited to see her take on the role of a lifetime as President Danielle Sutton, a character she describes as “the sort of thing you’d imagine as a kid, just playing the most heroic character you could possibly play.”
While the film’s plot shares some parallels with our own political climate, I’m not going to lie – I’m more interested in seeing Davis kick butt and take names than I am in any deeper meaning behind it. But hey, if it turns out to be a fun movie that also happens to have something to say about the state of our world, all the better!
In the words of President Sutton herself: “I hope you’re ready for the ride of your life.” I know I am – bring on April 10, 2025!
Oh, and let me leave you with this little joke: Why did Viola Davis go to school? To get her POTUS-sional degree! (I’ll see myself out now…)
Viola Davis is poised to portray the next U.S. president in an upcoming film production. The esteemed EGOT-winning actress, celebrated for her roles in movies such as Fences and The Woman King, among many others on both big and small screens (not forgetting her impressive stage performances), has been cast in Patricia Riggen’s new action-packed thriller titled G20. This highly anticipated movie will make its debut on Prime Video starting April 10, 2025.
According to fresh news from Variety, a movie led by Davis will also star Anthony Anderson, Clark Gregg, and Antony Starr. Notably, Starr is famously recognized for his chilling role as the evil and twisted character Homelander in Amazon’s popular and outrageous series, The Boys.
The movie features Davis portraying President Danielle Sutton, who finds herself under threat during a G20 summit of global leaders. In the plot summary, “Having managed to elude her assailants, Sutton embarks on a mission to outwit the enemy, ensuring the safety of her family, preserving her nation, and shielding world leaders.
What Do We Know About ‘G20’ So Far?
In this production, Davis shares the screen with a talented ensemble. Anthony Anderson portrays her husband, Derek Sutton; Marsai Martin plays their daughter, Serena Sutton; Ramón Rodríguez is cast as Agent Manny Ruiz; Douglas Hodge takes on the role of Oliver Everett; Elizabeth Marvel acts as Joanna Worth; Sabrina Impacciatore portrays Elena Romano; Christopher Farrar assumes the character of their son Demetrius Sutton; Clark Gregg brings Vice President Harold Mosley to life; and Antony Starr is cast in the role of Rutledge.
In a statement, director Riggens had this to say about her film and its leading lady:
Experience Viola Davis like never before as she takes on daring action sequences in a worldwide rollercoaster ride! With ‘G20,’ my aim was to create the type of gripping, nerve-wracking action movie I’ve always loved, but with a contemporary twist that reflects our technologically advanced world. I hope this film will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish!
Regarding her role in it, Davis enthusiastically discussed her experience portraying POTUS, stating at the Red Sea Film Festival in Saudi Arabia in December that the part was like a childhood dream, playing the most heroic character imaginable. She further mentioned that Sutton was a war hero and secured the election on a liberal platform. Davis added that while the film’s character shared similarities with earlier stages of the U.S. presidential election cycle last year, it is primarily intended to be an entertaining movie rather than a reflection of reality.
The screenplay for G20 was penned by Caitlin Parrish, Erica Weiss, along with brothers Logan and Noah Miller. Director Riggen, a renowned Mexican filmmaker, is recognized in America for her work on the 2007 film “Under the Same Moon” and the 2011 Disney Channel original movie “Lemonade Mouth.” She has also lent her directorial skills to numerous television productions, such as “Jack Ryan,” featuring John Krasinski, and the critically-acclaimed Hulu series “Dopesick.
G20 will hit Prime Video in 240 countries worldwide on April 10, 2025.
